CountyTax Assessor not seeking re-election in 2012
LIVINGSTON — Polk County Tax Assessor- Collector Marion “Bid” Smith has announced he will not seek another term during the March 2012 primaries. Smith said he had been considering retiring for some time and after discussions over the weekend with his family he announced his decision to tax office employees Monday. Smith was first elected to the post in 1994 and had worked in the tax office for seven years prior to running for the office. The county tax office handles vehicle registrations, billing for all taxing entities in the county and voter registration. “I’m not leaving to accept another position, I’m just ready to leave behind working 40 hours a week,” Smith said Tuesday. Polk County Republican Party Chairman Benny Fogelman said Livingston realtor Nicholas Baskin filed paperwork declaring his candidacy for Tax Assessor-Collector on Tuesday. Other candidates will likely join the race, according to several sources.
