‘Small amount’ taken in Shepherd bank robbery
Polk County Enterprise - July 2009
SHEPHERD – A search is under way for a lone suspect who robbed First State Bank in Shepherd around 9:20 a.m. Friday, July 3. According to First State Bank President Ben R. Ogletree Jr., a black male entered the bank, located on Hwy. 59, asking about opening an account and reportedly acting irrational. “He went back out to his car to get money and came back in with a stick or club, threatening employees and grabbing money from a cash drawer before going back to his car and heading south on Hwy. 59,” Ogletree said. “Bank employees and customers who witnessed the scene followed the suspect down the highway while they notified deputies by cell phones about their location,” Ogletree said.
“The undetermined amount of money taken by the suspect had an exploding dye pack in it, which went off while the suspect was driving. He (suspect) was probably pretty uncomfortable once that happened because there is a good amount of pepper and tear spray in those packs,” Ogletree said. Arriving in Cleveland, the suspect reportedly wrecked his vehicle and fled on foot. Authorities from San Jacinto County and the Cleveland area, as well as Texas Rangers, are conducting a search for the suspect while continuing an investigation at the bank. “We are thankful no one was hurt during the incident,” Ogletree said. DPS troopers picked up the suspect’s vehicle and towed it to the DPS Crime Lab in Conroe to be processed. The suspect was still at large at press time Friday.
