Livingston utility worker killed in accident

LIVINGSTON — Jorge Pichardo, 48, of Livingston, an employee of the City of Livingston Water Department died at about 12:15 p.m. Tuesday in a backhoe accident in the 300 block of First Street, according to a statement released by City Manager Marilyn Sutton Wednesday. Pichardo has worked for the water department for four years. The Livingston Police Department responded immediately to the scene of the accident and offi cers observed that Pichardo had suffered fatal injuries while operating a backhoe, S u t t o n ’s statement said. Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace David Johnson pron o u n c e d Pichardo dead at 12:30 p.m. Johnson ordered an autopsy to be performed and Pichardo was taken to the Jefferson County Morgue by Cochran Funeral Home.
An investigation by the Livingston Police Department is continuing, city offi cials said. LPD investigators was assisted by Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Sammy Lattner, who assisted with recording evidence at the scene. “Since coming to work for the city in 2005, George earned the respect of his fellow employees for his dedication to his job and for his willingness to work hard to accomplish whatever he could do to provide service for our citizens,” City Manager Marilyn Sutton said. “He was well-loved by all of the City ‘family’ for his compassion, his sense of humor and his dedication to his family and to his community.” “The Mayor, City Council members and City of Livingston employees extend their sympathy and support to George’s family. He will be greatly missed and we are deeply saddened by his death.”
