HOUSTON — Polk County Pct. 1 Constable Charlie Clack was struck by a pickup truck while working an extra job directing traffi c in the Rice Village area, Houston police said Monday. Clack had been working along a stretch of Kirby undergoing storm sewer replacement. “I turned my back on a guy and he ran over me,” Clack said as he was returning to Livingston. He was conscious and talking after he was hit, police said. He has been treated and released from a Houston hospital. Clack himself said he had minor injuries that would sideline him for a couple of days. The cause of accident is under investigation. The identity of the driver is not yet available. The driver, who did not give his name, told the Houston Chronicle that the constable stepped out in front of him from between two concrete barriers, prompting him to slam on his brakes. But he skidded into him, and the offi cer went down. The driver estimated he was traveling about 15 m.p.h. at the time.
