Inmate dies at county jail

LIVINGSTON — Staff at the Polk County jail found an inmate dead in his cell Thursday morning when security personnel went to get the man to complete booking procedures, according to a statement released by Polk County Sheriff Kenneth Hammack Thursday. Leroy Clifton Johnson Jr., 53, was arrested by a trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety for driving while intoxicated Wednesday afternoon, Hammack said. The DPS trooper took Johnson to Memorial Medical Center - Livingston to have a blood sample drawn to determine his blood alcohol level.
The man was taken to the Polk County Jail at about 3:30 p.m. The man had been held in the visitation area alone until about 2:30 a.m. Thursday when offi cers when to get him to complete booking procedures they discovered he was dead, according to Hammack’s statement. The visitation area was used so that Johnson could be monitored at all time from the control offi ce, as in normal procedure with intoxicated inmates. No foul play is suspected and the case is under investigation by Texas Ranger Ron Duff. Johnson was pronounced dead by Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Darrell Longino and was taken to the Harris County Medical Examiners Offi ce for an autopsy.
