Onalaska council commends OPD officers for burglary bust
Polk County Enterprise - June 2008

ONALASKA – During Tuesday night’s City Council meeting Onalaska Police Chief Ron Gilbert presented certifi cates to two city officers for their involvement in apprehending a robbery suspect at Jerry’s Restaurant. Officer Brian Perkins found Shannon Hayes Barber about to exit Jerry's Restaurant during the early morning hours of June 3 after a passing motorist reported suspicious activity. With Hayes arrest, OPD was able to clear another burglary case in another Onalaska subdivision.

After several months of meetings and decision-making, council members voted to approve Ordinance No. 310 which defi nes the requirements for establishing and operating a mobile home or trailer park inside the city limits. Speaking after the meeting, Onalaska Mayor Lew Vail pointed out that the ordinance does not affect personal homes on individual lots. “This action is constructive, not punitive, and is the city trying to address things before they happen,” Vail said.

Police Chief Gilbert presented the monthly department report to council members for May 2008. The department received 144 calls for the month. Offi cers made seven felony arrests and 53 misdemeanor arrests. OPD provided assistance to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office on 41 calls and made eight calls with the Onalaska Volunteer Fire Department. There were 50 calls to the fi re department in May, including three structural fires and one vehicle fire.
