Firefighters battle blaze at asphalt plant Sunday
Polk County Enterprise
LIVINGSTON — Crews from Livingston, Onalaska and Scenic Loop fire departments were able to quickly extinguish a fire at a Livingston asphalt plant reported at 7:02 p.m. Sunday. Assistant Livingston Fire Chief John Haynes said preliminary indications showed the fire began in an electric motor used to circulate an asphalt mixture to prevent it from hardening before it is applied. Haynes said a line in one of the storage tanks came loose and spilled some of the product on the ground. That product caught fire and burned insulation off two storage tanks. When firefighters arrived they first worked to protect a couple of fuel tanks near the fire. “We protected those exposures first then used foam lines to put the fire out and swept the product into containment dikes,” Haynes said. The cause of the fire is under investigation by Livingston Fire Marshal Mark Taylor. LVFD’s response included 19 firefighters and five trucks; three trucks and eight firefighters arrived from Onalaska VFD and one truck and eight firefighters from Scenic Loop VFD.
