28-year-old woman killed in head on crash
LIVINGSTON – A 28-year-old Livingston woman was killed early Monday morning in a head-on crash on FM 2665, 4.5 miles east of U.S. 190. Pronounced dead at the scene by Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Larry Whitworth was Kristy Nettles, who would have celebrated her 29th birthday on Tuesday, according to Texas Highway Patrol Trooper G. David Flowers. A 1996 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Angel Nava, 29, of Mission was eastbound and crossed into the westbound lane, colliding head-on with a 2005 Pontiac driven by Nettles, Flowers said. Nettles’ body was taken to Cochran Funeral Home. Nava was transported by medical helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital with serious internal injuries. The accident occurred at 5:40 a.m. The trooper indicated it will likely be up to the district attorney to determine if charges will be filed against Nava. Also investigated was a one-vehicle accident at 11:30 p.m. Friday on Old Groveton Road, three-tenths of a mile north of U.S. 190. A 1998 Ford Explorer driven by Darryl Lee Southerland, 38, of Onalaska was southbound when the driver, who admitted he had been drinking, fell asleep, according to Trooper Kevin Burman. The vehicle left the road, struck a wooden guardrail and ended up nose down in a creek bed. Southerland, who was listed with possible injuries, left the scene, according to Burman, who said the accident was reported early the next morning by a passerby who noticed the vehicle in the creekbed. Southerland has been charged with failure to meet requirement on striking a highway fixture.
