LPD arrests man for theft against the elderly
LIVINGSTON — After receiving a complaint that a Livingston man had allegedly been preying on an elderly local woman, telling her a series of bogus stories since the end of 2009 to solicit sympathy and taking and undisclosed amount of money from her since that time, Det. Leon Middleton of the Livingston Police Department believes there may be other victims in the Livingston area. A family member reported that Benny OGuin would call or come to the victim’s house and give a fictitious story about why he needed money and she would give it to him, often writing him a check. Middleton said OGuin was arrested shortly after 6 p.m. Dec. 15 and charged with theft against the elderly, a third degree felony. “We worked another case on him in August 2010 for the same thing and he’s still on probation for that,” Middleton said. “We have noticed him in a couple of neighborhoods, and it seems like he might be preying on older ladies who would be sympathetic to the stories that he’s telling them. He remains in the Polk County jail in lieu of $30,000 bond.
