ALTO — Former Polk County deputy sheriff Randy Bridges, 52, of Corrigan, was killed Saturday when his pickup slid off U.S. 69 and overturned about six miles south of Alto, according to reports from the Texas Department of Public Safety. The crash occurred at about 9:55 p.m. Randal Verdell Bridges of Corrigan was driving a 2008 Dodge truck and towing a sport utility trailer. The truck was headed southbound on U.S. 69 and entering a curve when Bridges lost control of the vehicle and it overturned, according to Trooper Rusty L. Pitts. The road was wet and it was raining at the time of the crash, according to Pitts report. Bridges was found in the vehicle and wearing a seat belt. Bridges was pronounced dead at the scene by Cherokee County Pct. 4 Justice of the Peace Vera Foreman. Bridges was a former lieutenant for the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, a law enforcement instructor for Angelina College and a former sergeant for the Angelina County Sheriff’s Office. Funeral services were held Wednesday in Lufkin. |
