Former Seven Oaks City Marshal dies

LIVINGSTON – A long-time fixture of the Seven Oaks community died Friday, less than two weeks after being injured in an automobile accident in Polk County. George Kenneth Jones, 81, died in Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, where he had been air-lifted after his pickup truck was struck by a tractor-trailer on Sept. 18 on U.S. 59 in Seven Oaks. Jones was driving a 2009 Ford pickup truck northbound and had slowed to make a right turn into a gas station, according to Texas Highway Patrol Trooper Christopher Cain. His pickup was struck in the rear by a northbound 2011 Kenworth truck driven by Roberto Rodriguez, 49, of Mathis. Rodriguez was not injured and pulled his 18-wheeler onto the highway shoulder. Jones’s pickup truck continued across the southbound lanes of traffic, coming to rest in a ditch. Jones was transported by medical helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he later died. Rodriguez was initially charged with failure to control speed. Additional charges, if any, are pending results of an autopsy. Jones had served in various capacities, including city marshal, for the City of Seven Oaks, where his mother, the late Viola Jones, was long-time mayor. Funeral services for Jones were held Tuesday at Cochran Funeral Home. Also investigated by the Texas Highway Patrol was a two-vehicle accident at 6:35 p.m. Sept. 26 on FM 3126 at FM 2457. A 1999 Jeep Cherokee driven by Michael Alan Levine, 54, of Livingston was stopped at a stop sign at the intersection and a 2012 vehicle driven by Laura Hutchins Gustafson, 55, of Kirbyville failed to control speed and struck the rear of Levin’s Jeep, according to Cain. Levine was listed with possible injuries, but declined medical treatment at the scene
