Empty Stocking applications now accepted
LIVINGSTON – Applications for area low-income families wishing to receive assistance during the 2013 Empty Stockings Program will be taken through Dec. 14. Donations from those interested in helping with the program also are being received. Sponsored by the Livingston Interagency Council, the Empty Stockings Program was created in 1988 to help low-income families provide Christmas toys and other items for their children. Last year the program served 836 children from 314 families and organizers expect the number will be higher this year. Applications for assistance are being accepted at the Department of State Health Services (DSHS) at 410 E. Church Street, Suite B from 1-4 p.m. on weekdays and at Community Action at 1114 Dogwood from 8:30-11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. To be eligible for the program, applicants must provide proof of all household income within the previous 30 days. This includes Food Stamp eligibility printouts or Medicaid eligibility printouts; Social Security award letters; pay check stubs, copies of paychecks or a letter from an employer; and bank statements. If the family has zero income, they must provide proof of who is paying their bills. Identification required when applying include a current Texas photo identification card or driver's license, Social Security cards and birth dates for all household members. Applicants also must show they are residents of Polk County using a Food Stamp eligibility printout, a utility bill or a lease/mortgage agreement. They also must show school enrollment verification for the children. The Empty Stockings Program is a combined effort of area schools and local service organizations that is designed to eliminate duplications in order to better serve the needy families of Polk County. Those wishing to make a difference in the lives of local children at Christmas may buy a gift, sponsor a family or make a contribution. Those wishing to make a monetary donation may send checks payable to the Empty Stocking Program to Angela Figgs, Community Action, 1112 Dogwood, Livingston, Texas 77351 or to Peggy Wooten, DSHS, 410 E. Church, Suite B, Livingston, Texas 77351. Donations also may be made by direct deposit to the Empty Stocking Fund at First National Bank, 308 W. Church, Livingston, Texas 77351.
