Leggett defeats Round Top-Carmine for Area title, 55-52

 

BRYAN—The Leggett Lady Pirates made a successful entrance into the Class 1A Division II state basketball playoffs by defeating Round Top-Carmine 55-52 to win the Area championship Friday night at James E. Rudder High School in Bryan. The Lady Pirates of head coach Terri Barlow, 22-4 for the year, won the District 26-A championship and received a bye in the first round of the state playoffs. Leggett was scheduled to play Kennard in the regional Quarterfinals Tuesday night at Corrigan High School. The winner will advance to the Region IV tournament, which will be held Friday and Saturday at Canyon High School in New Braunfels. Leggett is one of eight teams left in Region IV playoffs. Other teams playing in the quarterfinals were Rochelle vs. Leakey, Calvert vs. Chireno and Moulton vs. Menard. Round Top-Carmine The Lady Pirates handled Round Top-Carmine through three quarters and held a comfortable 17 point lead (46-29) entering the final quarter. The Lady Cubettes stormed back in the final eight minutes with a 23-9 advantage to make it a three point win for the Lady Pirates. Leading the charge for Leggett were the duo of Briunna Criswell and Tyanna Barlow who deposited 22 and 20 points, respectively. Barlow leads the team in scoring this year with 661 points for a 25.4 scoring average per game. Criswell is runner-up in scoring with 387 points and a 15.5 average per game. Others to pitch in points for the Pirates were, Kaycee Mitchell with five points. Mitchell has averaged 5.5 points per game for the Lady Pirates. Teammates Olivia Battise and Yasmine Battise added four points apiece in the win. Olivia averages 2.3 points a game and Yasmine has averaged 6.5 points a game this year. Top rebounders for Leggett were, Tyanna Barlow, 10; Yasmine Battise, nine; Briunna Criswell and Olivia Battise, four apiece; Kaycee Mitchell and Ashley Collins, one apiece. Barlow also registered one block, six steals and three assists. Criswell added five assists and had one steal.
