Ninth-ranked Calvert upends Goodrich in Area finals, 80-48
CONROE—The No. 9 state ranked Calvert Lady Trojans jumped out to a 29-9 lead in the first eight minutes and never looked back to claim an 80-48 win over Goodrich in the Class 1A Division II Area championship Friday night at Conroe High School. The sluggish start did the young Lady Hornets in as they were only outscored by seven points (16-11 and 16-14) over the next two frames. Calvert, who was scheduled to play 10th ranked Chireno in the regional quarterfinals, finished the fourth frame with a 19-12 advantage to secure their 27th win of the season against just one loss. Despite the lopsided loss, the Lady Hornets of head coach Ursula Hill can hold their heads high. They are definitely a team on the rise. They will have their entire team back next year, which will include just one senior, four juniors and two sophomores. Goodrich ends the 2013-14 season with a very respectable 23-8 record. After finishing runner-up to Leggett in District 26-A, the Lady Hornets won a first round playoff game against Laneville, 62-48. Calvert, a perennial playoff team, was too much to handle. The Lady Hornets had trouble stopping Tiffany Williams who led all scorers with 32 points. Calvert also had double digit performances from Jaylonn Walker (18) and Diesha Clark (16). Sophomore Kristian James was the workhorse for the Lady Hornets, scoring 29 points. Freshman Denedra Taylor was runner-up with 13 points and both Karen Andrade and Rosalind Harrell pitched in two points apiece.
