Big Sandy Wildcats defeat New Summerfield 76-52 to win Area


HUDSON—The No. 4 state ranked Big Sandy Wildcats demonstrated a tenacious defense and had four players strike for double digits to upend the New Summerfield Hornets 76-52 to win the Class 1A Division 1 Area championship Friday night in Hudson. The Wildcats of head coach Kevin Foster was down by seven in the early going but turned the tide with tough defensive pressure and 14 first half points from Angel Bullock which was enough to overtake the Hornets 33-26 by the midway mark. More fuel was added to the fire in the second half when the trio of Trent Williams, Benson Williams and Jalen Abbey combined to score 41 of the Wildcats 43 second half points. Both Trent Williams and Benson Williams finished with a game high 20 points apiece. Trent scored 16 of his points in the second half, which would include four from 3-point territory. Benson ignited the 'Cats by scoring 10 of his 14 second half points in the crucial third quarter. Jalen Abbey scored 11 of his 18 points in the second half, hitting three field goals, one trey and a pair of free throws. The Wildcats outscored the Hornets 23-13 in the third to lead by 17 points (56-39) entering the fourth. They dominated the final quarter by posting a 20-13 advantage over the Hornets. Trent Williams led the final frame with 10 points. Jalen Abbey and Benson Williams added four points and Blaine Tolar pitched in two points for the Wildcats. The Wildcats next opponent will be the Tenaha Tigers in the Regional Quarterfinals. The Tigers advanced with a 52-46 win over Pineland West Sabine. In other Region III Area action, Grapeland defeated Martins Mill 71-68 in overtime; Kerens defeated Bosqueville 47-37; Wortham, 61 Waco Meyer 56; LaPoyner 46, Mart 39; and Alto defeated Brookeland 71-46
