Lady Lions pick up a pair of wins in tournament

LIVINGSTON—The Livingston softball team had a productive start to their annual tournament by winning two out of three games on Friday, however, when bracket play began on Saturday they were eliminated after suffering a 6-2 loss to Central. The Lady Lions had a 2-0 lead over Central after three innings but gave up a run in both the fourth and fifth frames. With time expired the tie-break rule was invoked and a runner was put on second base. The Lady Bulldogs took advantage of the extra inning by scoring four runs off two hits, one walk and one Livingston error. It was a deficit the Lady Lions could not overcome after being limited to just one single in the bottom half of the inning. Defensively, the Lady Lions played well. Outfielders Kara Churchman and Darian Drake snagged everything that came their way and the entire infield played flawless with the exception of one throwing error that accounted for one of the Lady Bulldogs' four runs in the final inning. The Lions plated the first runs of the ballgame, scoring two in the bottom of the third inning. Jillian Barrett started the action with a one out single to left field. Central got the second out of the inning when they caught Hallie Smith's line drive shot into left field. Hailey McClendon was hit by a pitched ball to put another runner on base for the Lions. Savannah Crawford came through with a double into left field scoring Barrett who was safe on a slide at home plate. A RBI single by Jordan Rasberry plated McClendon to put the Lady Lions up 2-0. Central fielded a grounder for the final out of the inning. The Bulldogs methodically got back into the game by scoring one run off one hit and one walk in both the fourth and fifth frames. The damage knotted the score 2-all and forced the game into extra innings. The Lady Lions, who finished with five hits, would connect just two hits over the final three frames. Lindsey Moore connected a one out double but was left stranded in the fourth inning. Jordan Rasberry hit a leadoff single down the left field line in the tie-break inning, but was stranded after Livingston had two batters hit pop flies and another caught trying to advance home on a wild pitch. Hallie Smith worked all six innings for the Lady Lions. Smith gave up six hits, walked three batters and struck out four. Friday's action The Lady Lions saw plenty of action Friday with games against New Waverly, Lovelady and Tyler Lee. New Waverly out hit the Lady Lions 7 to 4 and finished with a 4-2 win in the first game of the day. Both Savannah Crawford and Hailey McClendon smashed doubles for the Lady Lions and Kelsie Fuller and Lindsey Moore collected singles. Bats came alive in the second game as Livingston smashed seven hits in a 12-1 win over the Lovelady Lady Lions. Hallie Smith pitched all three innings and allowed just three hits and finished with a pair of strikeouts. Savannah Crawford hit the only extra base hit for the Lady Lions by collecting a double. Hailey McClendon hit two singles in the win, while teammates Kaylee Click, Jillian Barrett, Kara Churchman and Sabrina Rodriguez all hit singles for the Lady Lions. The Lady Lions won their second game of the tournament with a 5-2 win over the Tyler Lee Lady Red Raiders. Livingston scored one run in the top of the first inning. Hailey McClendon hit a one out single to right field and later scored on an infield single by Darian Drake for the early 1-0 lead. The Lady Lions took advantage of two hits and three Red Raider errors to score four runs in the top of the third to take a 5-0 lead. Hallie Smith started the action with a leadoff single to left centerfield. Hailey McClendon would reach on an error. Smith and McClendon would both cross home plate courtesy of another Red Raider error for a 3-zip lead. Savannah Crawford and Darian Drake reached on an error and a fielder's choice, respectively. They later scored on a 2-run single by Kelsie Fuller for a 5-0 margin. Tyler Lee would score two runs on one hit, one walk and a Livingston error in the bottom of the fifth frame. Final, Lions 5, Red Raiders, 2. Hallie Smith worked all five innings and allowed just three hits, two walks and would finish with eight strikeouts for the Lady Lions.
