Wrong-way driver sends 3 to hospitals
CORRIGAN – A woman driving the wrong way on U.S. 59 has been charged with intoxication assault in connection with an accident Monday night that injured three people, according to the Texas Highway Patrol. Amy Lenora Smith, 42, of Lufkin was driving a 2011 Honda Pilot southbound in the northbound inside lane of U.S. 59, just north of Corrigan, according to Trooper Darwon Evans. Her vehicle collided head-on with a northbound 2009 Ford Focus driven by Michelle Leann Warren, 24, of Lake Jackson. Warren and a passenger in her car, 22-year-old Joshua Harding of Lake Jackson, were both air-lifted by helicopter to area hospitals – Warren to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Beaumont and Harding to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. Smith, who is facing charges in the accident, was transported by ambulance to Memorial Medical Center in Lufkin. The Corrigan Volunteer Fire Department assisted in freeing victims involved in the wreck, which occurred at approximately 10:25 a.m.
