Leprechaun walk kicks off Onalaska’s Round-Up
Polk County Enterprise, March 2007
ONALASKA – The city of Onalaska is hosting a 5K Leprechaun walk beginning at City Hall and winding through Old Town beginning at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 17.
The St. Patrick’s Day-themed event marks the City of Onalaska’s entry into a statewide health and fitness initiative, Texas Round-Up.
On March 17 an expected 40 participants will follow a marked 5K route through Old Town Onalaska that includes a water stop at the halfway mark.
The midpoint falls near Tom Edwards’ home on Commercial Street, Mayor Lew Vail said. So participants can recharge for the final leg of the event.
Participants who use wheelchairs or power chairs can join the mayor in a 9:30 a.m. start. The under 18 group will leave the starting line at 9:45 a.m. and all others will begin at 10 a.m., Vail said.
Monitors will be stationed along the route and green beverages and other goodies will be available at the finish line, Vail said.
T-shirts will also be given to participants, Vail said.
“For our first year in Texas Round-Up, it’s pretty good to get an event organized and held so quickly,” Vail said.
Gov. Rick Perry launched Texas Round-Up in 2004 to encourage Texans to be more active and make healthier choices in their daily lives.
Participating cities have pledged to help make Texas the fittest state in the nation.
