Lions Club seeking children, teens to attend special camps

Polk County Enterprise - February 2008

LIVINGSTON – The Livingston Lions Club is looking for children with physical disabilities or type-I diabetes who dream of going to summer camp.

The Lions Camp in Kerrville will host the physical disabilites camp June 29 to July 5 and the type-I diabetes camps from July 20 to 26 and July 27 to August 2.

The Lions Camp is a non-profit organization, funded by the Lions of Texas and private donations which allows children to attend the camp at no cost to their families.

The camp is located on over 500 acres of hills and woodlands in the beautiful Texas Hill Country in Kerrville and offers special one week camping programs that serve children who have disabilities (physically, hearing or vision impaired, etc.) and are ages seven – 16 and type-I diabetes who are ages eight – 15.

The Livingston ISD school nurse can assist parents in determining if their child’s disability qualifies them to attend.

The camp offers a wide variety of activities including arts and crafts, field sports, riding horses, swimming, theater and camping overnight under the stars.

The primary purpose of the camp is to provide an atmosphere wherein campers will learn the “Can Do” philosophy and be allowed to achieve maximum personal growth and self-esteem. The camp is available to children from the State of Texas, regardless of race, religion, or national origin.

The Livingston Lions Club will provide free transportation to and from the physical disabilities camp. Parents of children attending one of the two type-I diabetes camps are requested to provide their own transportation.

Further information and applications may be obtained by contacting Lions Club members, Dave Veinotte (936) 566-5566 or Sam Gordon (936) 327-8042.
