Paint Polk County purple
Polk County Enterprise - April 2008
LIVINGSTON – By now most everyone in Polk County knows that spring brings Little League baseball games, fi shing tournaments and Relay For Life. This year is no exception and the Relay c o m m i t t e e is asking the entire county to take part this year by helping to “Paint Polk County Purple”. An award will be given this year to the business that does the best job of promoting Relay For Life through the use of purple to tell its customers that Polk County is the number one Relay in East Texas.
To kick start the project, The Believer’s Team is back with new shirts! These shirts are Relay purple with green lettering and sport the word “HOPE” and a Mardi-Gras-appropriate fl eur-de-lis along with this year’s slogan, “Celebrate, remember, fight back.” “We’re encouraging businesses and individuals who aren’t involved in Relay as a participant due to time constraints or other obligations but who want a shirt to wear to the event or to show support to those battling the disease to purchase a HOPE shirt and wear it on May 2 in a display of unity in the fi ght against cancer,” said Tammi Ogletree, team chairman for Relay For Life of Polk County. “What a powerful message it would send to visitors to our county on May 2 if everywhere they went store clerks, waitresses, offi ce workers and other citizens were wearing the same shirt,” added James Baugh, event chairman.
The shirts will sell for $10 with all proceeds benefi tting Relay For Life. You can order your shirt from your favorite Relay For Life team – a list can be found at www.polkcountyrelay.org – or at the offi ces of the Polk County Enterprise, 100 E. Calhoun. Orders will only be taken through April 16 so that shirts can be delivered the following week. Judging for the Paint Polk County Purple award will be done May 1. Any business that would like to have their facility considered for the award should contact Tammi Ogletree at 936-327-7700 no later than April 28. Relay For Life committee members are also continuing to register cancer survivors and caregivers at the event website or by contacting Genette Harrelson at 327-3292. Luminarias are also on sale to honor cancer survivors and remember friends and loved ones who lost their battle with cancer. Luminaria forms are available at many area businesses or by contacting Cindy Wilkinson at 327-2111. For more information about Relay For Life, visit www.polkcountyrelay. org.
