Polk County Enterprise - May 2008
LIVINGSTON — Clarke Evans eked out a term in the Livingston mayor’s office with a 12-vote margin over William “Bill” Watson. Evans, a local real estate broker, received 435 votes to local optometrist Watson’s 423. Both candidates had lengthy experience on city council. “I appreciate the support of all my friends and neighbors,” Evans said. A recount is likely, according to election officials who asked not to be identified.
The race pitted two hometown businessmen in a tight race for the first contested mayoral election in more than 32 years. In the four-candidate race for two council positions, Billy Sol Wiggins was the top vote-getter with 472 votes. E. Ray Hill claimed the second seat with 339 votes. Scott Simpson garnered 316 while Elgin Davis got 272.
“I’m very excited to get started serving the community,” Wiggins said. “It’s a bittersweet victory because I like all those guys in the race,” Wiggins added. “I’m very thankful for all the support I’ve had during this race.
