GISD Gifted and Talented to be honored in West Columbia
Groveton News - April 2009
The 10th, 11th, & 12th grade members of the Gifted and Talented group at Groveton High School will be traveling to West Columbia, Texas, on April 17th to be honored at the dedication ceremony of a new historical park.
The GT students entered a contest last school year to name the new park and the entry submitted by Groveton’s GT class was selected as the winner. “Capitol of Texas Park,” as it has been named, is a bit of Texas’ historical past. It is the site where Sam Houston took the oath of office as the first President of the Republic and Stephen F. Austin was named Secretary of State.
This location was used as the capital of the Republic of Texas from October 3, 1836, until Texas became a state in 1845. The congress of the republic met at this location for 3 months before moving to Harrisburg (Houston). The GT class will travel to West Columbia, where they will be taken on a tour of several museums, be treated to lunch and then honored at the park dedication ceremony and reception. Participants are: Aley LaRue, Jessica Ayala, Viktorya Hill, Tyler Rosser, Chelsea Bullard, Kacie Due, Jackson Pruitt, Danielle Traub and Calvin Williams. The high school GT sponsor is Laura Rosser.
