Groveton News - March 2007
TRINITY COUNTY - The Annual Trinity County Fair and Youth Livestock Show is set for March 15, 16, and 17. FFA students from Apple Springs, Centerville, Groveton, and Trinity, along with 4-H students from over the county will be showing their livestock projects. Students will also be showing projects in the following divisions: welding, wood-working, cosmetology, building trades, auto mechanics, life skills, and baked goods. Some of the FFA projects will be a tractor implement, an arena drag, feed troughs, a trailer, and a squeeze chute. Wood-working projects will include saddle and gun racks.
There are over 200 livestock entries scheduled to be shown. The livestock exhibited by the students will be swine, fryers, broilers, goats, lambs, steers, and commercial heifers. The concession stands will be open throughout the duration of the fair. The Trinity County Fair Association invites everyone to come to the three-day event at the County Fair grounds at the “Y”, where US 287 intersects with SH 94.
Last year’s Grand Champion Steer was shown by Brittany Blackstock of the Groveton 4-H and was purchased by Tommy Johnson for $4,300.00. Other champions and reserve champions also sold well, so the students can look forward to selling and receiving funds for their hard work and dedication during the past several months.
This year’s show will start at 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 15. Each exhibitor, showing a steer, must have their project in the arena at that time. Then, the sifting will take place which will be followed by the weigh-in of the steers.
On Friday, March 16, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. will be check-in time for all other Market Animals, Shop Projects, and Home Economic Projects. That afternoon, at 3 p.m., the Broiler competition will begin and will be followed by the Goat competition at 4 p.m. At 6 p.m., the Swine competition will begin.
More competitions will be held on Saturday, March 18 with the Fryer and Commercial Heifer competitions beginning at 7 a.m. Following these competitions will be the Lamb competition at 10 a.m. and the Steer competition at 11 a.m.
The Pet Show will begin at 12:30 p.m. when kids, ages 3 to second grade, will bring their pets to show. In the past, dogs, goats, ponies, turtles, guinea pigs, and others, including a pet rock, have been shown. This part of the County Fair has become a big hit with the spectators and has even appeared on America’s Funniest Videos.
At 5 p.m. that evening, the Award Presentations will take place and will be followed by the Auction of the Premium Market animals at 5:30 p.m.
The Trinity County Fair Association members and volunteers are to be commended for the work they have completed on the Show Barn and the area around the barn. More concrete was poured under the Show Barn which completed the rest of the barn, as well as other improvements. Each year, the Fair Association strives to make the facilities the best around.
Come on out to the 2007 Trinity County Fair and Youth Livestock Show and support the FFA and 4-H youth of Trinity County, get some BBQ at the concession stands, and enjoy the nice facilities at the Show Barn. |
