Mount Zion Cemetery Historical Marker to be dedicated October 6, 2007
Groveton News - September 2007

Please join us at 11:00 a.m. on October 6, 2007, for the formal dedication of the long awaited historical marker at Mount Zion Cemetery.
The Texas Historical Commis-sion has recognized the Mount Zion Cemetery as a significant landmark by naming it a Recorded “HISTORIC TEXAS CEMETERY”.
The designation is the highest honor the State of Texas bestows to venerable and heritage-rich cemeteries.  To qualify for such designation, a location must be at least 50 years of age and have retained its architectural integrity from a period at least 50 years ago, must be in a good state of repair and be an exemplary model of preservation.  Historic land-marks serve as directories of early residents and reflect the cultural influences that helped shape our State’s communities.  The Recorded HISTORIC TEXAS CEMETERY design-ation helps to bring attention to these community treasures and the importance of their preservation.  Awareness and education are among the best ways to guarantee the preservation of such heritage-rich sites for our future generations.
The marker is now in place and will be formally dedicated during the Annual Homecoming scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 6, 2007.
We hope to see you there.
     Ben Pyle, Chairman
     Historical Marker Committee
     Mount Zion Cemetery
