Mount Zion Cemetery dedication as a “Historic Texas Cemetery” set for Oct. 6th
Groveton News - October 2007
A dedication ceremony for Mount Zion Cemetery, Apple Springs, as a recorded Historic Texas Cemetery, will be held on October 6, 2007, beginning at 11:00 a.m. This is the day of the annual Mount Zion Cemetery homecoming. A Historic Texas Cemetery designation is the highest honor the State bestows to heritage-rich cemeteries.
Larry Oaks, executive director of The Texas Historical Commission states that “Historic landmarks serve as directories of early residents and reflect the cultural influences that helped shape our State’s communities. The recorded Historic Texas Cemetery designation helps bring attention to these community treasures and the importance of their preservation for our future generations”.
The public is encouraged to attend and share in this proud historic event, and to stay on for a short business meeting and dinner on the grounds following the dedication.
The Cemetery is located off F M 357 South, 5 miles out of Apple Springs. A Mount Zion Cemetery Road sign directs to follow dirt road east for 1 mile to the entrance.
“While he did match the description we had, I believe we have now ruled him out as being a suspect (in the armed robbery),” Jones said.
However, during a routine computer check of Whipple’s criminal history, Jones said officers discovered the Wood County warrants.
Jones noted he does have additional leads regarding a possible suspect in the case.
The sheriff added he also has been in contact with investigators in Angelina County regarding the possibility the Apple Springs video store bandit also might be involved in a robbery of a Lufkin convenience store.
“The convenience store was robbed about an hour and a half after the Apple Springs robbery,” Jones said. “A shotgun also was used in the Lufkin robbery.”
Because of the close proximity in time and the use of a shotgun in both robberies, investigators were looking for other possible connections between the cases, Jones said.
After the robbery was reported, Jones said a number of deputies were called to the scene to search for the suspect and were quickly joined by Pct. 4 Constable Kent Blanchard.
“I also paged the members of the Apple Springs Volunteer Fire Department to be on the lookout for the suspect and gave them the description,” he added.
