Three more candidates file for political offices
Groveton News - December 2007

GROVETON – The list of candidates to be listed on the March 4, 2008, Democratic Party Primary election increased by two during the past week, according to Trinity County Democratic Chair Freddie Chapman.
Jolie Webb Lane of Trinity has filed seeking the party’s nomination for the Trinity County Tax Assessor-Collector’s post.
In addition, Donald Kent Blanchard is seeking the Precinct 4 constable post. Precinct 4 includes much of northern Trinity County, including the communities of Apple Springs and Centerville.
Lane is seeking the post now held by Kathy McCarty while Blanchard was appointed to the constable’s position following the death of former Constable Florine Davis.
Blanchard is being challenged for the office by Richard Steptoe.
Filing for positions on both the Democratic and Republican party primaries got underway on Dec. 3 and will continue through Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008. Both elections will be held on March 4, 2008, with the winners of each primary facing one another in the November general election.
As of press time, there were no local candidates who had filed to run in the Republican Party primary.
Candidates who filed in the Democratic Party primary on the opening day of filing included Janet Reynolds Cassels of Apple Springs, who is seeking the 258th District Attorney’s position now held by Joe Ned Dean.

Throwing their hats into the ring for the Trinity County sheriff’s position were Richard “Ricky” Hortman and Steven Lewis Jones.
The office currently is held by Jones, who was appointed in April following the resignation of former Sheriff Jimmy Smith.
Pct. 1 Commissioner Grover “Tiger” Worsham and Pct. 3 Commissioner Cecil Webb each filed seeking re-election to new four-year terms.
In the constable races, Robert “Sterling” Johnson has filed seeking the Precinct 2 position. That office currently is held by Hortman, who filed to run in the sheriff’s race.
As of Monday evening, local offices for which no candidate had yet filed included the county attorney post now held by Joe Bell; the Precinct 1 constable post now held by Woody Wallace; and the Precinct 3 constable position now held by James O. Reynolds.
Candidates interested in running in the Democratic Party primary for a local office may pickup application forms at the Trinity County Democratic Office located at 133 N. Magee Street (next door to Groveton Floral) in Groveton. The office is open from 8 a.m. to noon weekdays and its telephone number is 642-0264.
Those interested in filing for a local office in the Republican Party primary should contact Trinity County Republican Party Chair Janet Brannen at 581-2270.
