Big Thicket Messenger - August 2008
Polk County Sheriff’s Office narcotics detectives arrested Ernie Eugene Rodvant Jr., 54, of Big Sandy on Wednesday, August 6, ending a three day stakeout of a growing field of marijuana.
Lieutenant Andy Lowrie said a Crime Stoppers tip launched the five-week investigation into the field and who was growing the contraband.
Detectives visited the site and found evidence of frequent foot traffic around the plants, which were ready for harvest. The investigation included aerial surveillance by DPS helicopter crews.
Lowrie and Investigators Howard Smith and Randy Johnson entered the field Monday waiting for the grower’s arrival.
The officers remained camouflaged in the field through thunderstorms until Rodvant arrived in the field at about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday carrying a machete.
He was taken into custody after chopping down about 12 of the plants and officers remained another 33 mature plants.
Assisting in the investigation were the Polk County Sheriff Office Criminal Investigation Division, Precinct 1 Constable Charlie Clack, Investigator Mark Jones, Texas Ranger Ron Duff and a DPS flight crew based in Houston.
Lowrie estimated the plants weighed between 25 and 50 pounds. The current street value of a pound of marijuana is $600 to $750.
