Big Thicket Messenger - September 2008

A 9-1-1 call was made on Tuesday, August 19, at 10:48 p.m. in which a man had reportedly been shot. The call was made from New River Lake Estates in North Liberty County.

Deputies Ronnie Alexander and Sam Pierce responded to the call on CR 2166 and found a man, Joseph William Masterson II, 41,  been shot in the arm and upper part of his body by a shotgun.

Masterson was transported to Cleveland Regional Hospital, with CPR in progress by Cleveland EMS. He was pronounced dead at 12:21 a.m. on Wednesday, August 20.

The crime scene, lead by Sergeant Billy Know, revealed that Masterson was at the home of Jennifer Deplois. Jennifer’s husband, Larry Deplois, 39, returned home early surprising his wife and Masterson. A struggle between Larry Deplois and Masterson occurred. Deplois reportedly shot Masterson as he was running from the home and then fled the scene. Justice of the Peace Bobby Rader issued an arrest warrant for murder.

According to the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, on August 20, at approximately 5:00 a.m. Deplois had returned to his home. Deputies were then dispatched to the scene on CR 2166, and found him hiding in a closet. He was arrested and taken to the Liberty County Jail.

No bond was set on Deplois. An autopsy was performed on Masterson’s body on Wednesday, August 27.
