Photos sought for Exhibit
Big Thicket Messenger - May 2007
The Tyrrell Historical Society is collecting photographs and information documenting World War II veterans from Jefferson County. All of the photographs and information will be cataloged and preserved at the Library.
If you have a photograph that you want to share with the Library, you have two options. You may mail a copy of a photo to Penny Clark, Tyrrell Historical Library, P.O. Box 3827, Beaumont, Texas 77704. Or you can come to the Library (located at 695 Pearl in downtown Beaumont) and the Library staff can copy your photo and return your original to you in five minutes.
An exhibit honoring the veterans is planned for June 30th at 2:00 p.m. at the Library. Anyone with a photo for the exhibit should act quickly, as photos exhibited will be those that arrive fast.
The exhibit will include not only photos but war-time memorabilia including an officer’s uniform in mint condition which was worn by Willie Gray, a model of Pearl Harbor created by Joey Elizando, medals of Ole Langham, and a memorial to men who died in the war loaned by First United Methodist Church.
The exhibit will feature music from the Firehouse Band, and an address by three-star general Mike Cokinos. Cokinos, a member of Texas A&M Class of 1943, received many medals during the war. After the war, he founded the Cokinos Insurance Agency and continued to serve in the U.S. Army Reserve, retiring as Brigadier General in 1980.
