The Wonder of Wonders
Big Thicket Messenger - January 2008
by Rev. Jean Holder

it was prophesied in Old Testament times that a virgin would bring forth a child, and His name would be called Emmanuel, meaning “God with us.”

Isaiah  7:14 begins, “Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign. Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel.”

Isaiah chapter 9, verse 6 reads, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government shall be upon His shoulder, and His Name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.”

Some say that the Old Testament is done away with, that we don’t need it anymore.

Jesus said that He didn’t come to do away with the law, but to fulfill the law.

We know in the Old Testament they would sacrifice lambs and such, but they had to be spotless and clean. If they had any blemish they would not be accepted.

When God was looking for the perfect lamb or maid to bring forth His Son, He saw this young virgin called Mary and she was the one. She was spotless and never touched by man.

Back then if a woman was caught in the act of adultery they would stone her to death. Now days they would run out of stones.

We know He was in the lion’s den. He was also in the fiery furnace with the three Hebrew children.

He is omnipotent.

It tells us in Luke chapter 1, verses 26’38 about the angel Gabriel coming to Mary. The 31st verse tells how Gabriel told her she would conceive and bring forth a son and call His Name Jesus.

The 34th verse tells how Mary questioned the angel, ‘How can this be, seeing I know not a man?’ The angel told her, the Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee. Therefore also that Holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

He came to this earth, born in a stable, because there was no Room at the Inn. He came to save us from our sins. So we could have life and have it more abundantly. He is the Wonder of Wonders.

Think about it. Here is this virgin girl chosen by God to conceive by the Holy Ghost, and bring forth a son that will one day be the Savior of the world. As the song says, she looked with wonder upon His little face and this little boy spoke the worlds in there place. The earth and the sun were created by Him. I’m sure she was looking upon Him as the Wonder of Wonders that God became flesh and was given for me and He died for my sin.

Think about how it felt to hold your first baby and look at it’s baby innocence. When our son or daughter grows up to be successful, we are very proud. But think about how Mary felt as she looked down and smiled, and realized that He was her maker, as well as her child. She realized He created the womb that had given Him birth. He was God incarnate come down to the earth.

Don’t you know she looked at Him in awe, as she heard His small cry, this voice had thundered at Mt. Sinai. (Old Testament). He had made the dry path through the mighty Red Sea. (Old Testament)

She watched Him grow up into a man. Watched Him turn water into wine, heal the lepers, and open blind eyes. He healed the woman with the issue of blood and many other wonderful things. He was and still is the Wonder of Wonders.

He came as a babe the first time but when He comes again, He will come as the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. Every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that He is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords.  Amen.

We don’t really don’t if December 25th is when He was born, but we set aside this day to remember His birth. We should not forget the Spirit of giving either. He gave so much for us.

Remember it is good to give gifts but let’s not forget what it means. Give of yourself first of all.
