The Man At The Well
Big Thicket Messenger - February 2008
by Rev. Roy Holder
Most of the time when we got to the scriptures of John 4 we talk about the Samaritan woman who met Jesus at the well. Today, however, I would like to expound on the “Man at the well – Jesus”.
Verses 1-5 begins, “When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John.” “(Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples).” “He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.” “And he must needs go through Samaria.” “Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychaar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.”
Jesus was always traveling doing His Father’s will and in this scripture verse He went through Samaria and met the woman at the well. Jesus is the One that does all of the great work, although it was His disciples that did the baptizing.
Verse 6-8 continues, “Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.” “Then cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.” “(For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat).”
Jesus was tired after walking for 6 hours. His disciples were sent into the city to buy meat, so that Jesus could witness to the woman. He ministered to the Samaritan woman.
Verses 9-10 says, “Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him. How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? For the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.” “Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.”
The Samaritan woman did not know who Jesus was. She had never reached out to accept the gift of “living water” that He had to offer.
Verses 11-12 states, “The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?” “Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?”
All we have to do to get a cool drink of water at a well is to take the dipper and reach inside. The same water that Jesus had to offer was the living water that refreshed every time you accept this free gift. Every time we come to drink with Jesus He offers us this “living water.”
Verses 13-14 relates, “Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again.” “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst: but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.”
Can you imagine being in a desert and needing water and you can’t find any. As we travel through this world we also need to have the “living water” that is only offered by the man who visited that well and encouraged that Samaritan woman so many years ago.
Verses 15-18 reminds us, “The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband.” “For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.” “The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.”
Whatever we do, wherever we go, whatever we say, and whatever we have need of – He knows. Whenever the day comes for us to stand before God we should be sure all of our sins are covered.
Verses 20-22 concludes, “Our fathers worshipped in this mountain, and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.” “Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.” “Ye worship ye know not what: for salvation is of the Jews.”
We have talked with many that do not believe they have to worship or go to church. It’s important for us to teach our children and to raise them a way that glorifies God. It’s important to teach them to praise the Lord for their food, etc.
Many will not receive what Jesus offers. It’s sad to see that the gospel is not accepted. Time is drawing near to the end of this world – it’s time to heed the words of the man at the well and accept the living water that only He can give.
