Walking Towards Jesus - Sermon
Big Thicket Messenger - February 2008
by Cheryl Goodwin
What better week to write about the wondrous love of Jesus than the week that we celebrate “Love”, also known as Valentine’s Day-
Our scripture reference is found in the Love Chapter of God’s Holy Word, I Corinthians 13 where we begin with verses 1-3, “Though I speak with the tongues of men and angels, and have not charity, I am became as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.” “And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.” “And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.”
We can be one of the most dedicated Christians in the world, and give everything that we have away, but if we don’t do everything in charity (love), then we have not done anything.
Verses 4-8 continues, “Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up.” “Doth not behave itself unseemly, seekth not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;” “Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth.” “Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.” “Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall pass away.”
Love overlooks a lot of faults and is not given just to get. It seeks not for its own self, but wants to give to others. Love does not fail others, and when we want to share with others we make every effort to do good to them. In other words, we act as Christ does.
Verses 11-13 relates, “When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.” “For now we see through a glass darkly: but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.” “And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three: but the greatest of these is charity.”
When we are children, we tend to be friends and love everyone. We may get upset with a classmate, but pretty soon we get over that childish behavior and overlook their faults. We find a good friend and we be a better friend. We may not understand what we see or how we feel, but when we get to Heaven, we will be known as a King’s Kid.
We may have the greatest of faith, we may have hope out of this world, but unless we have that love we accomplish little or nothing at all. Won’t you make a decision today to love others, as Jesus loves us?
Jesus is standing right there waiting with outstretched arms of love to welcome you in. He will hold you, caress you, and lead you through the hard times that we all face in this world. I don’t know about you, my friend, but I want Him on my side. I want Him to love me with that unconditional love that only He can offer. Won’t you allow Him to love you and welcome you into His loving arms today? Just walk forward right into His outstretched and loving arms and accept that love today! |
