Meet and Greet conducted
Big Thicket Messenger - February 2008
by Valerie Stewart
On Saturday, February 9, 2008, at the Votaw-Thicket Fire Hall a special event took place. All of the local Hardin County candidates were invited to what was set as a “Meet & Greet” the public. Along with the event there would be a gumbo sale and a cake auction. The proceeds of this event were going to be used to assist with a 11-year-old in our community that was running for Valentine Sweetheart. The sweetheart position she was running for was at school, and to win it she had to raise the most money.
In our community lives a man and his family who we all truly love. This man has had a very tough time health wise the last couple of years. Just this last week he has had a stroke, something found on his brain, and when he went back to work had a major accident. At this time he has lost sight in one of his eyes.
The 11-year-old girl, Elaina Williams, heard of the mishaps of this family and made the most awesome statement I have ever heard come from a child this age. Elaina said, “I want the money raised to go to this man and his family because it is more important that a man have food for his family than it is for me to have a title.” At 11 years old to most young girls it would be important to have a crown and a title. To this young lady she showed that having a big heart and caring for people was much more important. What a true blessing this child is, not only to the family that she helped raise money for, but all who know her.
A decision was made to crown her as our local sweetheart. Elaina was crowned “Our Special Sweetheart”, and was presented with a dozen long stemmed red roses and a sweetheart sash. This presentation was made by Hardin County Sheriff Ed Cain. She was a beautiful sweetheart. But even though the beauty on the outside was visible, it was the beauty in her heart that showed bright that day. With a heart like this young lady has she will receive many more crowns.
What a day it was. Elaina made it very special for us. Also the candidates did as well. Each candidate spoke. Those in attendance were:
- Constable Candidates – Thomas Anderson and Tim Moody.
- District Attorney Candidates: David Sheffield and Henry (Buggs) Coe.
- Commissioner Candidate: Ken Pelt
- State Representative: Mike (Tuffy) Hamilton.
- Democratic Chairman: Vickie Breckel
- Sheriff Candidates: Darrell Werner, Mike Day and Ed Cain.
Each candidate delivered a good speech. They each greeted the public and spoke with many voters. We wish each candidate many blessings as they pursue the office they are running for. Our day finished with a cake auction. Some of our area’s finest cooks, displayed their talents with these cakes.
After the clean-up was done and we rested a few minutes, we took “our special sweetheart” and let her deliver this gift to this family. He was very touched by this, along with his wife. All I could think as my day came to an end, I am so blessed to be from a community that takes care of their own people and I am so honored to be part of a special young ladies life…Elaina Williams is definitely my special sweetheart. |
