Black History Calendars

The 2008 Black History Calendar of Liberty County, a joint product of the Liberty County Historical Commission and the Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center is available for purchase at the Liberty Municipal Library, 1710 Sam Houston, and at the Sam Houston Center, 650 FM 1011, Liberty. The price for the 2008 calendar is $5.00.

The cover of the calendar features the 1939 St. Joseph Catholic Church of Dayton. Other images are the 1957 St. Joseph’s Catholic Church congregation of Dayton. Molly Charles Love and her children, Nora and Jessie Love in 1956 when the won the Liberty Training High School music and math science awards, the Mamie Smith family of Dayton in 1940; the 1948 Liberty Training School Class; the 1925 John and Sadie Wright wedding; a St. Julian Family gathering; Roy “Pete” Brown Sr., Joe Day and Richard Day, all of horseback, taken in Dayton in 1919; the Arthur and Carrie Young Brazier Sr. Family of Ames; a 1928 four-generation photo of Amelia, Epheme Wickliff, Stella Wickliff Wells and her daughter, Doris Wells; the 1946 Miss Liberty Training School Doris Wells; and the 1894 portraits of Denis and Philamene Prejean Ozan. The month of November features veterans from World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Veterans pictured are Bee Carter, Charles Trahan, Roy Trahan, James Patterson, Arthur Roy, Chester Roy, Harold Roy, John Roy, Raymond Roy, Cleveland Walters Jr., John Walters, Larry Walters, Lela Walters and Robert Walters.

Other individuals included in this year’s publication are Angelina Arceneaux, Harrison “Slim” Arceneaux, Earl Brazier, Erby Small Brown, Roy Carrier Sr., Alma Mallet Chavalia, Donald Coleman, Henderson Day, Barbara Donatto, Bonnie Donatto, Catherine Dugat, Mary Dugat, Alma Edwards Dickerson, Calvin Dickerson, Hilda Fontenot, Ricky Fontenot, Helen Goudeau, James Goudeau, Carrie LaCour, Ella Mae LaCour, Janice LaCour, Percy LaCour, Renee LaCour, Will LaCour, Jennifer Love, Jim Love, Jules Mallet, Alvine Mitchell, Elizabeth Montgomery, Ella Pounder, Norma Redmond, Freddie Rundless, John T. All proceeds from the sales of the calendar benefit the Liberty County Historical Commission and provide funding for the printing of future calendars.

The calendar can be ordered by mail at a cost of $7.00 per calendar from the Sam Houston Center. Make check payable to the Liberty County Historical Commission.

The Sam Houston Center, a part of the Archives and Information Services Division of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, is located three miles north of Liberty, on FM 1011, off of State Highway 146. It is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4_00 p.m. Admission is free.
