Ace Community Park
Big Thicket Messenger - April 2007

Perhaps as you have passed by the Ace Community Park, Inc. on FM 2610 you have seen young people shooting hoops or engaged in a hot basketball game. Maybe they were playing baseball, playing on the swings and see-saws, or just playing their own games on the open space of the four acre park. Some tennis players may have taken advantage of the two lighted tennis courts. Delivery personnel often take advantage of the toilet facilities of the park. Youth working off excess energy in the park setting are less inclined to get into trouble because of unused energy.

Ace Community Park, Inc. was completed in 1985 with an appraisal of $120,000. It was constructed on four acres of land donated by the late Harmon Walters. Once the covered pavilion was completed the community set about completing the park with $100,000 in improvements including the construction of a concession stand, two rest rooms, basketball hoops, a baseball diamond, two lighted tennis courts, twelve picnic tables, three barbecue pits, three drinking fountains, playground equipment and a welded pipe enclosure plus a parking area. These improvements were funded by donations from community and former community members, along with a $30,000 loan, which was repaid over a ten year period with more donations from community minded friends. Members of the Ace Community are very proud of this beautiful park set alongside FM 2610.

The Park is open for use by members of the community at any time during operating hours and can be reserved by those wanting exclusive use for reunions, meetings, Cub Scout activities, weddings and church functions for a $75.00 donation per day. Reservations can be made by contacting Tommy and Auda Bee Wood at (936) 685-4491. This donation fee was recently increased from $50.00 per day to help defray increasing expenses.

With twenty-two years of wear on her, the park is in need of some fairly extensive maintenance. The Park Board consisting of Hershel J. Mackey, President, Joe V. Tullos, Vice-President, Liz Ellis, Secretary, Carolyn Tullos, Treasurer, Tommy Wood, Reservations and all around Handy Man, Paul Stephen, Board Member and Neil Colquit, Board Member, have set a Spaghetti Lunch beginning at 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on March 31 to raise needed funds. The Park is located at 3026 FM 2610 adjacent to the South Polk County Fire Department.

Donations of $6.00 per person will provide you with spaghetti, a drink, garlic bread and a dessert and the Park with funds for Operational and Maintenance expenses for Ace Community Park, Inc.

Please come out and help fund the improvements and operational expenses for Ace Community Park, Inc. and keep her operating into the future for all to enjoy.

Your donations will be appreciated. For those who are unable to attend the dinner and wish to donate to this important fund please remit your tax-deductible donation to Ace Community Park, Inc., P.O. Box 321, Ace, Texas 77326.

There will be an auction of items donated by community members. If you would like to donate items for the auction or desserts for the dinner, please call Auda Bee Wood at (936) 685-4491 or e-mail at audie@samlink.com.

Thank you for caring.
