Tyler County Booster- December 10, 2009 - December 20, 2009

Donald Gallaway
Donald Louis Gallaway, age 69, of Woodville, Texas, died Wednesday, December 9, 2009, at Tyler County Hospital in Tyler, Texas. He was the son of the late Elvin Gallaway and the late Vivian (Davidson) Gallaway. He was in the Navy during the 1960’s. He worked in the plants in Texas City and was a heavy equipment operator in the construction field for many years. He belonged to the CPF and Local 450. He enjoyed playing games on Pogo and fishing. He is also survived by his three sons, Tim Gallaway, Johnny Gallaway and Andy Gallaway; two sisters, Maxine Harvey and Sandra Morgan; two brothers, Lloyd Gallaway and James Gallaway. Funeral service will be at Lexington Cemetery at 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 12, 2009. Interment will be at Lexington Cemetery in Lexington, Texas.

Florene Oliver
Florene McCormick Oliver, 97, a long time resident of both Polk and Tyler counties, passed away Friday, December 11, 2009 at Tyler County Hospital in Woodville, Texas. Florene was the first of four children of William George Walker Jr. of Rock Island, Texas and Arminta Carrie Martin of Colmesneil, Texas. She married Eugene Clarence McCormick of Leggett, Texas on June 8, 1929. They raised a family of five children in the communities of Garvey, Bold Springs and Schwab City in Polk County. Gene passed away on June 6, 1950 and Florene married Garlie W. Oliver in 1963. After Garlie passed away in 1993 she lived near her daughter, Bertha Maxwell in the Dam B Community. She was a long time member of Schwab City Baptist Church and in recent years a member of Fairview Baptist Church in the Town Bluff Community. Florene is preceded in death by her husbands, Eugene Clarence McCormick and Garlie W. Oliver; her oldest son, Billy McCormick and youngest son James McCormick. She is survived by sons, John Earl McCormick and Harold McCormick; daughter, Bertha Maxwell; brother, Harrison Collins Walker; ten grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. Visitation was held on Sunday, December 13th at Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home in Woodville from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Funeral services were held Monday, December 14th at 11:00 a.m. at Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home Chapel in Woodville with a 2:30 p.m. graveside service at Alexander Cemetery in Leggett, Texas. Officiating was Brother Doyle Butcher. Serving as pallbearers were Gene Williams, Keith Williams, Lynn Williams, J.P. Williams, Stephen McCormick, Kyle McCormick, Bill McCormick, Tom McCormick, Jeff McCormick and Andrea McCormick. Services were under the direction of Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home of Woodville, Texas.

James Lawrence
James was born August 1, 1912 to James Lawrence, Sr. and Winifred Rachel Key in Normana, Texas. He was a longtime resident of Hillister and was a retired pipefitter. He was intellectual, contemplative and was an extremely well read man that enjoyed his life in the country. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Davis Lawrence in September of 1994 and a son, James V. Lawrence, III. He is survived by his son & daughter-in-law, Derry Clee & Marta Lawrence of Parthenon, AR; and six grandchildren, Windy Hamrick, Tandy Lawrence, Bryon Lawrence, Noel Lawrence, Jimmy Lawrence and Jeffery Lawrence. Cremation services were under the direction of Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home of Woodville.

Khandi Sledge
Khandi Davis Sledge, 36 of Vidor passed away December 11, 2009 at her residence. Born September 16, 1973 in Galveston, Tx to James Ocea Davis and Margie Penn, she lived all of her life in Vidor, Tx. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, O. D. and Jean Davis and Frank and Olemae Penn Khandi is survived by her son, James Wesley Sledge of Vidor; father, James Ocea Davis of Colmesneil; mother, Margie Odom and husband, Tim of Vidor; sister, Cyrstal Davis of Austin; brother, Frank McMahn of Sour Lake; and numerous other family members and friends. A graveside service was held Tuesday, December 15, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Rockland City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Wesley Davis, Frank McMahn, Tim Odom, Jason Connley, Wesley Sledge and Brian Sledge. Serving as honorary pallbearer was James Fruge. Services were held under the direction of Riley Funeral Home of Tyler County.

Michael Kerr
Michael “Mike” Kerr, Sr., 69, of Lumberton, died Tuesday, December 8, 2009, at Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth in Beaumont. He was born August 24, 1940 in Lufkin, Texas to Sarah Gibson and Darwin Kerr. Mike has lived in the Beaumont area for almost twenty years and was a courier with Errand Boy Express. He was a retired veteran from the United States Navy. Survivors include his wife of forty-eight years, Carol Kerr of Lumberton; son, Mike Kerr, Jr. and his wife Janice of Colmesneil; daughters, Rebecca McNeely and her husband Milton, Jr. and Sarah James and her husband Roy of Wimberley; five grandchildren, Janna Vaughn, Dustin McNeely, Pvt. Blake McNeely, Jacki Kerr and Garrett Pope; four great-grandchildren, J’Lee Vaughn, Hannah Brook McNeely, Marlee Vaughn and Riley Vaughn; and brothers, Gerald Kerr of Palestine and Karl Kerr of Nacogdoches. He was preceded in death by his brother, Andrew Kerr. A gathering of his family and friends will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Saturday, December 12, 2009, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. Minnie Phillips
Minnie Carl “Min” Phillips, 82, of Bacliff, formerly of Woodville, passed away Sunday, December 13, 2009 at her residence. F uneral services will be Thursday, December 17th at 11:00 a.m. at Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Magnolia Cemetery in Woodville. Officiating will be Brother Ross Shelton. V isitation will be held on Wednesday, December 16th from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Min was born April 12, 1927 to James Ambrose Dean and Minnie Matthews in Willis, Texas. She was a former longtime resident of Woodville and had lived in Bacliff for the past six months. She had worked as an administrator in the medical field. She loved to garden, especially roses, and she loved her children and her Lord. S he was preceded in death by her husband Carl and eight brothers and sisters. She is survived by her daughters & sons-in-law, Linda Sue Maglothin of Murphy, NC, Sandra & Gary Sills of Bacliff and Barbara & Grover Brister of Ranger; brother, James Dean of Schwartz; sister, Sue Lankford of Conroe; grandchildren, Greg Sills of Webster, Michael & Hilary Maglothin of Boston, MA, Joshua Sills of San Antonio, Jeremy Brister of Ranger, Nicole Brister of Amarillo, Jennifer Maglothin of Akron, OH and Sarah & Edward Gonzalez of League City. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 202 S. Charlton, Woodville, Texas 75979. Services are under the direction of Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home of Woodville.

Bessie Jo Nichols
Bessie Jo Nichols, 78, of Kountze, Texas went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 12, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont. Bessie was born to the late Charlie Busby and Louzean Moye in Spring Hill Community, Woodville, Texas. A home-going celebration will be held on Saturday, December 19, 2009, at 12:00 noon, at the Trinity Valley Dist. Cemetery in Kountze. A glimpse into glory will be on Friday, December 18, 2009, from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., at the Haynes Temple C.O.G.I.C. in Kountze, Texas Haynes Settlement Community. Bessie Jo leaves to cherish her loving memory, daughters, Chakora Nichols, Carolyn Watkins (Willie), Vera Manning, LaDietra Nichols, and Alberta Nichols, all f Kountze. Letha Wilson (Troy) of Cedar Hill, Bessie Ray Jackson (Larry) of Lancaster, and Agnes Faye Thompson (Bill) of Desoto, sons, L.F. Nichols and Gary Nichols, both of Kountze, a brother, Bobby Foster of Terrell, and a sister, Mira Lee Cruse of Hillister, 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
