ALTA ELIZABETH MANNING BUCKLEY
Mrs. Alta Elizabeth Manning Buckley, age 86 of Clinton Arkansas, formerly of Crockett, Texas, passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2009 in the Ozark Nursing home in Clinton, Arkansas.
Mrs. Buckley was born September 29, 1922, in Crockett, Texas, to the late W.A. (Dink) Manning and Essie Grounds Manning. She attended Crockett Public Schools and graduated from Crockett High School in 1942. On April 8, 1954, she was united in marriage to John E. Buckley in Crockett, Texas.
Mrs. Buckley joined the Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II. She attended and graduated from the Jefferson Davis School of Nursing of the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1947. In 1947 and 1950 she worked as a Red Cross nurse during the polio epidemic in Minnesota. She was Doctor Carl O. Murray's office nurse for 15 years and Director of Nursing for Whitehall Nursing Center for two years. Upon retirement from the nursing profession, she worked with her husband, John in the management of the King's Inn in Crockett.
Mrs. Buckley lived most of her life in Crockett, until 1987, when she, her husband John, and her daughter, Dian, moved to John's family home in Orleans, Massachusetts. She loved animals, taking in any stay dog or cat that showed up in her yard. She moved to Dennard, Arkansas in 2002.
Mrs. Buckley was a member of Maranatha Assembly of God Church in Shirley, Arkansas. Prior to moving to Massachusetts, she was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Crockett. She was a member of the Auxiliary of the United States Constabulary Association
Survivors include her daughter Dian Buckley, of Dennard, Ark.; nieces Drucella Faulk and husband John, of Jacksonville, Fla. and Barbara Nettles and husband Todd, of Clinton, Ark.; nephew Craig Manning and wife Beverly, of Crockett; great-nieces Lindsey Manning Watson and husband Jeremy, of Clinton, Ark. and Jessica Vickers and husband Wade, of Orlando, Fla.; great-nephews James Quentin Manning, of Austin and Richard Brian Manning and wife Ashley, of Bee Branch, Ark.; great-great-niece Kaitlin Manning, of Bee Branch, Ark.; numerous cousins and other relatives and many friends.
Preceded in death by her parents W.A. and Essie; husband John in 1999; two brothers J.C. Manning in 1916 and Quentin Manning in 1985; sister-in-law Olivia Manning in 1986; and a nephew William Brian Manning, in 1993.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Alta Elizabeth Manning Buckley were Sunday, April 5, 2009 at 2:00 p.m., at the Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel, in Crockett, with Dr. Paul Carlin will officiate. Interment followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park of Crockett.

BERTHA DELL GREEN BEST
Mrs. Bertha Dell Green Best, age 87 of the Plain Community, passed away Friday, April 3, 2009 in the East Texas Medical Center-Crockett. Mrs. Best was born to Jessup T. and Lena C. Green on April 20, 1921 in the Plain Community, Texas and had lived in Kennard/Ratcliff area all of her lifetime. She and her husband owned and operated the Best Hunting and Fishing Club. Mrs. Best was a member of the Plain Church where she served as Secretary and Treasurer for many, many years. She had also served as Secretary and Treasurer for the Conner Cemetery Association for 29 years.
Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends who will really miss her.
Preceded in death by her husband James Albert Best in 2001; brothers, C.O. (Hoss) Green and Willie Lynn Green; and sister Mildred G. Weiner.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Bertha Dell Green Best were held Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. in the Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jim Tom Ainsworth officiating. Interment followed in the Conner Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution may be made to the Conner Cemetery.

GARY PRESTON SLOAN
Mr. Gary Preston Sloan, age 55 of Houston, passed away Saturday, April 4, 2009 in Crockett. Mr. Sloan was born July 21, 1953 in Houston, Texas and had lived in Houston. He had worked as a Welder Fitter for Wilson’s.
Survivors include his mother Nellie Hoff, of Crockett; sister Kathy Cloud and husband Johnny, of Crockett; brother Aaron Sloan, of Crockett; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Preceded in death by his grandmother Estell Grounds Allen; father Aaron Sloan, Sr.; sister Jeanie Henderson; and nephew Glenn Henderson.
Graveside Funeral Services for Mr. Gary Preston Sloan were held Sunday, April 5, 2009 at 5:00 p.m. in the McCarter Cemetery.

GOREE "SONNYE" HALL JR.
Mr. Goree "Sonnye" Hall Jr., age 65, affectionately known as "Sonnye" to family and friends, passed away Thursday, March 26, 2009 in Crockett. Mr. Hall was born December 30, 1943 and was the oldest of five children born to the late Goree Hall Sr. and Hazel Hall. He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Bethel Baptist Church. After graduating from Ralph Bunche High School in 1962, he enrolled in Tyler Barber College and became a licensed barber. He was employed as a barber in Lufkin and Corpus Christi before joining the United States Army in 1965. Mr. Hall's occupational careers allowed him to touch the lives of many people with his smile, generosity, and kind spirit.
Survivors include his three loving sisters Jacquelyn Smith, of Las Vegas, Nev., Hayretha Thomas, of Houston and Frances Hall, of Las Vegas, Nev.; one devoted brother Cass Hall, of Dallas; two brothers-in-law Billy P. Smith, of Las Vegas, Nev. And Booker T. Thomas, of Houston; one aunt Thelma Tubbs, of Dallas; seven children Erika, Sheree, James, Preze, Khristi, Marcus and Taronda; one son-in-law Forester Baker husband of Sheree; five grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral Services for Mr. Goree Hall Jr. were held Saturday, April 4, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Henry Lovelady officiating.
Military Graveside Services followed in the Forest Lawn Cemetery, which included the playing of Taps and three uniformed military personnel folding and presenting the United States burial flag.

JANICE HOOKS ELLIOTT
Mrs. Janice Hooks Elliott, age 86 of Henderson, passed away Wednesday, April 8, 2009 in the Henderson Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Elliott was born in Crockett, TX on November 11, 1922 to Riley and Sallie Hooks of Latexo. She attended Latexo schools and graduated from Crockett High School in 1940. She attended Sam Houston State University where she majored in Art and was selected Freshman Beauty Queen in 1941.
It was at college where she met and married Drew Elliott of Normangee and they had 4 children. Mrs. Elliott moved to Houston and worked at People's Clinic as a receptionist for many years. She also worked at Methodist Hospital and The Galleria where she was Housekeeping Supervisor. She later moved back to Latexo and worked at the Crockett Library for several years.
Mrs. Elliott was very artistic and excelled in ceramics, oil paints, charcoal sketches and china painting. She was a member of the Crockett Art League and later a member of the Henderson Art League. Mrs. Elliott was a Methodist and a member of the Latexo Methodist Church.
Survivors include her children Patrick R. Elliott, Sr., of Brenham, Michael Elliott, of Bellaire (Houston), Karen Smith and husband Jerry, of Henderson-(Goodsprings Community) and Janell Ross, of Austin; brother Lloyd Hooks, of Huntsville; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by her parents Riley and Sallie Hooks; sister Johnnie Dominy; and grandson Glenn Riley Elliott.
Graveside Funeral Services for Mrs. Janice Hooks Elliott were held Friday, April 10, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in the Latexo Cemetery.

Mrs. Leoma Christine Farris, age 89 of Crockett, passed away Saturday, April 4, 2009 in the East Texas Medical Center-Crockett. Mrs. Farris was born June 26, 1919 in Madison County, Texas and had lived most of her lifetime in Houston County. She was the founding member of the Community Full Gospel Church in Kennard and was a housewife.
Survivors include her son Lloyd Farris and wife Janice, of Crockett; daughter Esther Corley and husband Dickey, of Crockett; grandchildren Cindy Gardner and husband Jimmy, Rachel Cleghorn and husband Mike, all of Crockett, Julie Newton and husband George, and Thomas Smith, all of Pennington; great-grandchildren Makayla Candice Gardner, of Crockett, Mindy Ditsworth and husband Dave, of Kan., Michael R. Cleghorn, of Nacogdoches, Malachi A. Cleghorn, Mikayla E. Cleghorn, both of Diboll, Devin Meinike and Caleb Newton, both of Pennington.
Preceded in death by her husband Lloyd Brooks Farris in 1993; and daughter-in-law Nora Farris in 1999.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Leoma Christine Farris were held Monday, April 6, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in the Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Ottis Byers officiating. Interment followed in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

MABEL S. HAIRELL
Mrs. Mabel S. Hairell, age 94 of Crockett, passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2009 in the Whitehall Nursing Center. Mrs. Hairell was born on January 11, 1915, in Yoakum, Texas to Edward and Mary Stokesberry Brown and had been living in Crockett for the past 3 1⁄2 years. Mrs. Hairell was retired having worked as a leather worker for Tex-Tan and was a member of the Catholic Church in Yoakum.
Survivors Include her daughter Linda Walters and husband Robert, of Yoakum; son Volley "Roger" Hairell and wife Lillie, of Lovelady; sisters Bernice Glowka, of Rockport, Earlene Boltz and Wanda Woytek, both of Victoria; brother Edward Brown, of Victoria; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by her husband Volley Hairell; sisters Lucille Koenning and Louise Zbitowski; and brothers Joe Brown, Delbert Brown and Harry Brown.
Rosary Services was held Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at Thiele-Cooper Funeral Home in Yoakum, Texas.
Funeral Mass for Mrs. Mabel S. Hairell were held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 8, 2009 in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Yoakum, Texas with the Rev. Matthew Huehlefeld officiating. Entombment at St. Joseph Catholic Mausoleum.
Pallbearers were Johnny Koenning, Jimmy Hairell, Tommy Hamlin, Anthony Brown, Joe Boop and Justin Boop.
Memorials may be given to St. Joseph School Endowment Fund.

MARY KATHRYN FAIN BEATTY
Mrs. Mary Kathryn Fain Beatty, age 91 passed away peacefully Saturday, April 4th, 2009. Mrs. Beatty was born April 2, 1918, in Trinity, Texas, her family moved to Crockett where she attended elementary and high school. She and her family were active members of the United Methodist Church.
Upon marriage in 1940 to her sweetheart, James Landon Beatty, she moved to Houston, Texas and lived there the rest of her life. She worked as a legal secretary for the first years in Houston. They joined the Westbury United Methodist Church in 1957 upon their move to that area, where they remained active members the rest of their lives.
Mrs. Beatty, a true lady, was well-loved by all. She enjoyed laughter and had a knack for saying something kind or encouraging to each person she met. Her home was always open and welcoming to visitors. She loved to travel and she enjoyed gardening. She was fond of nature and animals, especially dogs and birds.
Survivors include her daughter Fain Beatty Zimmerman and husband Roger Zimmerman; two granddaughters Jennifer Hardy and husband Wes Hardy, and Mary McKay and husband Jim McKay; and four great grandchildren Samuel and Kathryn Hardy and Abigail and Fiona McKay; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by her parents Samuel Arthur and Mary Jeanette (Mamie) Taylor Fain; beloved husband of 60 years, Jack Beatty; sister Margaret Fain Hall; and brother Melvin Fain.
Graveside Services for Mrs. Mary Kathryn Fain Beatty was held Wednesday, April 8, 2009 in Evergreen Memorial Park in Crockett.
Pallbearers were Wesley Hardy, Whitney Reed, Roy Shepperd, and Tom Mazzu.

WILLIAM CLOISE "BILL" MILLWEE
Mr. William Cloise “Bill” Millwee, age 85 of Crockett, passed away Sunday, April 5, 2009 in the East Texas Medical Center-Crockett. Mr. Millwee was born June 17, 1923 in Houston County, Texas and was raised there until moving to Houston to work in the ship yard.
He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps as Nose Guner flying 43 missions where he served from February 12, 1943 until November 10, 1945 as Staff Sergeant having received the following awards; Good Conduct, Air Medal, Victory Medal, Distinguished United Badge, American Theater Ribbon and Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon.
After discharged he had worked as a truck driver for Coca Cola and Gulf Oil Company in Houston. After moving back to Houston County in the early 1970’s he opened Millwee’s Exxon until 1981. He later went to work for Latexo School as a bus driver and maintenance personnel working some for Crockett I.S.D. as bus driver until retiring in 1994. Mr. Millwee at 70 years of age raised a garden every year until last year. He was a member of the Center Hill Methodist Church and was also an honorary member of the Latexo Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years: Hazel Millwee, of Crockett; son James Millwee, of Latexo; daughters Pamela Crowson and husband Marc, of Latexo, Deborah Johnson and husband Carl, of Humble; grandchildren Jami Johnson and John Johnson, of Humble, Samantha Vaughn and Jeanne Millwee, of Latexo, Luke Crowson and Cody Crowson, of Grapeland; brothers Thomas Ed Millwee and wife, Johnnie Bell, of Tomball, James Ray Millwee and wife of Kansas; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Preceded in death by his sons Billy Millwee in 1979 and Bobby Millwee in 2008; grandson Robbie Vaughn in 1985; sister Evelyn Christian in 2008; brother John Hugh Millwee; and parents Bill and Else Millwee.
Funeral Services for Mr. William Cloise “Bill” Millwee were held Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in the Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel with Randy Hargrove officiating. Military graveside services will follow in the Latexo Cemetery.
