MAGGIE SHIVERS KENT
Mrs. Maggie Shivers Kent, age 91 of Crockett, passed away March 31, 2009 in Winfield nursing home. Mrs. Kent was born in Crockett on September 28, 1917 to Robert Lee and Effie May Shivers.
She married Charles Kent in 1939 in Huntsville. They then lived in Grapeland until 1942. While Charles was in the Army, Maggie lived in Crockett and was joined by Charles in 1945 when he returned from active duty. In 1946, the first of their sons, Charles, Jr. was born. In 1956, a second son, Robert Lee, was born.
Mrs. Kent was active in the First Baptist Church. She directed the Sunbeams children’s group and the Girls Auxiliary for several years. She was also Sunday School Director of the Primary Department. Together with Arminta Arnold, she was instrumental in establishing the library at First Baptist, and served as a librarian for a number of years.
In addition to her church activities, she was active in Crockett civic affairs. She was one of the original docents for the Downs-Aldrich house. She enjoyed giving tours of the house, and coordinated and ran the gift shop. She also planned fundraising activities, including luncheons, to support maintenance of the house.
Mrs. Kent spent many years working with children. In the early 1950’s, she started the Humpty Dumpty play school in her home. And in 1962, she joined Crockett Independent School District, working with kindergarten students. She continued in this capacity until 1980. She was always known by her students as “Miss Maggie.” Many current Crockett residents who were in her classes always referred to her as Miss Maggie.
Mrs. Kent was beloved by everyone who knew her. She was always ready to help and to encourage anyone who needed her. Even in her later years, after Charles died, and she was in declining health, she set an example of perseverance and positive attitude that inspired her visitors during that time. In particular, her sons have memories of all that she did for them over the years. As the old song says: “Precious memories, how they linger, how they ever touch my soul.”
Survivors include her sons Charles Kent, Jr., of Houston, Robert Kent, of New Braunfels; nephew and niece Rick Cervenka and wife Cheryl, of Dolores, Colo., Linda Homeyer and husband Fred, of Georgetown.
Preceded in death by her husband Charles Kent, Sr.; parents Robert Shivers and Effie (Johnson) Shivers; and sisters Reba Pearl Shivers, Ossie Etheridge and Effie Cervenka
