CHARLES ROBERT LEWIS
Mr. Charles Robert Lewis, age 85 of Houston County, passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2012 in the East Texas Medical Center-Crockett. Mr. Lewis was born July 13, 1926 in Cameron, Texas and had been living in Houston County for the past 31 years, previously living in Houston. Mr. Lewis was a veteran of the United States Navy having served during World War II. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Latexo Baptist Church. Mr. Lewis had worked as a Supervisor and heavy equipment Operator for Armco Steel. Survivors include his sons Jerry Allen Lewis, of Huntsville, Robert Douglas Lewis and wife Lesa, of Houston County Lake and Kenneth Dale Lewis and wife Peggy Sue, of Conroe; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister Patsy See, of Magnolia; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. TIM BYNUM
Mr. Tim Bynum, age 69 of Weches, passed away Friday, April 13, 2012 at M. D. Anderson Hospital in Houston. Mr. Bynum was born March 12, 1943 in Houston to T. A. and Eva Mae Turney Bynum. Mr. Bynum was a carpenter. He was a member of the Tabernacle of Praise Church in Kennard, an active member of Tres Dias and a member of the Grapeland Masonic Lodge #473. Survivors include his wife Sue Bynum, of Grapeland; daughter Kimberly Sue Stokes and husband Gerald Stokes, Sr.; son Keith Alan Bynum and wife Tammy; sister Donna Jean Meek and husband Jack; brother Gary Don Bynum and wife Delores; grandchildren Dustin Alan Bynum, Anthony Stokes, Ashley Emigh, Britnee Stokes, Trevor Alan Bynum, Jacob Charles Alan Bynum and Lisa Marie Stokes; great-grandchildren Harley Rae Bynum, Addison Raye Emigh, Dylan, and Vincent; and numerous nieces and nephews. DAVID WESTON BENTON
Mr. David Weston Benton, age 84, went to be with the Lord Friday, April 13, 2012. Mr. Benton was born April 17, 1927 in Pennington, Texas. After serving his country in the Air Force during the Korean War. He enjoyed a career in the petrochemical industry as a millwright. On his days off, you could usually find him working at the farm or under the hood of a friend’s car. Survivors include his wife Hildred Benton; children Diane Benton McBee and husband Ron, Dan Benton, David A. Benton and wife Glenna, Dana Benton Zucha and husband Chris, Darrell D. Benton, Sharon Williams and husband Pat and Sheila Cliburn and husband James; grandchildren Justin McBee, Jeremy McBee, Benjamin McBee, Natalie Whittington, Emma Newton, Nicole Warren, Luke Benton, Darcy Benton, Drake Benton, Weston Zucha, Sarah Halbardier, Patrick Williams, Natalie Herring, Dennis Cliburn and Alan Cliburn; 13 great-grandchildren Cole, Alyssa, Trenton, Ethan, Owen, Michael, Emma, Tyler, Kyle, Paige, Jonathan, Monica and Felicity; and sisters Audrey Durham, Ernestine Buffington and Bobbie Jean Best. WAYNE MANNING
Mr. Wayne Manning, age 75 of Latexo, passed away Friday, April 13, 2012 at his residence. Mr. Manning was born June 9, 1936 in Houston, Texas and was a resident of Latexo. Mr. Manning was a veteran of the United States Navy for 3 ½ years having served as a Naval Air Dale during the Korean Conflict. He had worked as a plant Engineer for Southwestern Bell and retired after 30 years of years. Mr. Manning was a member of the Latexo United Methodist Church. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Bea Manning, of Latexo; sons Richard Manning, of Latexo, Doug Manning and wife Kandi, of Coldspring; daughter Faye Sansom, of Houston; brother A. R. THELMA WILLIAMS SHERROD
Mrs. Thelma Williams Sherrod, of Crockett, received her eternal Heavenly reward on April 16. 2012 while continuing to live at Whitehall Nursing Center at the age of 99. Mrs. Sherrod was born March 25, 1913 in Honey Island, Texas. Thomas and Thelma Sherrod along with their infant son, Philip, moved from Timpson to Crockett in 1935. They built a home later in 1937 on "Sherrod Hill" at 113 Viewcrest Lane. Tommy went into business on the square in Crockett with a Furniture Upholstery Shop, later adding Shoe Repair and then the shop became Sherrod’s Fixit and Swap Shop. She helped in the endeavor waiting on customers and in other ways. The Sherrods immediately after moving to Crockett joined First Baptist Church of Crockett where Thelma taught Preschool Children in Sunday School and in later years became the Secretary of the Pastor's Class. As Secretary of the class she kept in contact with all the class members and saw that food was provided for the family by the members any time there was a death in the class or church. Tommy sang in the choir, assisted in the oldest Sunday School Class and later became a Deacon. In later years both Thelma and Tommy joined the Melody Maker Senior Adult Choir, both of them loved their church and Ministers wholeheartedly and church life was a vital part of their family. Survivors include her son Philip Sherrod and wife Margaret; daughter Sharon Gosper Lesyk; daughter-in-law Lucy Spinks Sherrod; grandchildren Cherisa Sherrod York and husband Sammy, Rebecca Sherrod Guess, M. JOE ANN (SPINKS) BLACKWELL
Mrs. Joe Ann (Spinks) Blackwell, age 77 of Crockett passed away peacefully at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler on Monday, April 16, 2012. Mrs. Blackwell was born on August 31, 1934 in Porter Springs, Texas, the first of ten brothers and sisters. She was a life-long resident of Crockett where she and her husband, Eddie, of 56 years, raised their three children, Joe Eddie, Ginia, and Royce. She was also known as "Ma B" and "Mimi," served as a mother-figure to many, including her siblings, extended family and special friends. Mrs. Blackwell was a beautician in Crockett for over 50 years, avid Astros fan, expert tomato grower, and outstanding cook. In years past, she was actively involved with Elks Lodge Ladies Auxiliary, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She was also a part of the Callaway-Allee Funeral Home Family. Most of all, She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. Mrs. Blackwell was a seven year, stage three cancer survivor. BERTIE LEE ARNOLD MCLEAN
Mrs. Bertie Lee Arnold McLean, age 95 of Crockett passed away Thursday, March 22, 2012 in the Houston County Nursing Home. Mrs. Arnold was born August 22, 1916 in Pennington to E. B. and Ollie Smith Arnold. The Arnolds moved to Crockett where she grew up. She married Harry McLean on March 23, 1940. She worked for the ASC office for many years where she retired. Mrs. McLean was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church since 1949 serving on several committees. She enjoyed traveling abroad and geneology was one of her favorite interest. She was a member of the Major Jarrel Beasley Chapter DAR, David Crockett Chapter DRT, Huguenot Society of the Founders of Manakin in the Colony of Virginia: Colonel James XVII Century. She loved her friends, playing bridge and painting with watercolors. Survivors include her son James E. McLean and wife Sheila; step-grandchildren Jeff Bobbitt and wife Talitha, of Palestine, Sissy Lively and husband Randy, of Crockett, Jeremy Bobbitt and wife Dylis, of Weches and Ryan Bobbitt, of Grapeland; step-great-grandchildren Haylei and Colton Lively, Jordan, Jason, Justin and Jax Bobbitt; nephew Jared (Jerry) Arnold Anderson; great-nephew Jared Anderson. DR. THOMAS M. “DOC” WEATHERLY D.D.S.
Dr. Thomas M. “Doc” Weatherly D. D. S., age 86 of Lovelady, passed away Monday, April 2, 2012 in the East Texas Medical Center-Crockett. Dr. Weatherly was born December 26, 1925 in Houston, Texas and was a resident of Houston County since his retirement in 1991. He graduated from the University of Texas School of Dentistry in 1950. Dr. Weatherly was a veteran of the United States Army having served during World War II and served as an Army Dentist during the Korean War. He practiced dentistry in Houston for 39 years. Dr. Weatherly was a member of the Houston District Dental Society, life member of the Texas Dental Association and Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry. In 1949, he married Constance Davidson, she and their family were the loves of his life. His beloved Connee passed away in 1997. He married Jean Bosworth in 1998 and they lived in Lovelady until her death in 2009. Dr. Weatherly was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Crockett. His memories will live in the hearts of those who loved him. Survivors include his daughter Deborah Jefferies, of Lovelady; son and daughter-in-law Thomas S. and Cindy Weatherly, of Lovelady; son Timothy A. Mrs. Norma Cormack, age 83 of Lovelady, passed away Saturday, March 31, 2012 in the East Texas Medical Center-Crockett. Mrs. Cormack was born September 13, 1928 in Houston County and was a resident of Lovelady since 1976. Mrs. Cormack was a volunteer at East Texas Medical Center in Crockett. She was a housewife and a member of the Lovelady Church of Christ. Survivors include her daughter Billye Karen Cormack, of Houston; son Glen Cormack and wife Sherry, of Lovelady; granddaughters Danielle Cormack, of Seattle, Washington, Lyndsey Cormack Karr and husband Doug, of Dallas and Ryley Cormack, of Lovelady; brother Ogie Whitehead and wife Littie, of Pearland; sister Evelyn Russell, of Pearland; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. LOLLY NICHOLS
Ms. Lolly Nichols, age 64, a longtime friend and employee of the Texas Press Association, passed away Sunday morning, April 8, 2012 at Hospice Austin’s Christopher House after a battle with lung cancer. Ms. Nichols served as administrative assistant to the executive director since 1994. In her 18 years of employment with TPA, she never missed a convention. Her friendship and dedication will be sorely missed. Mr. Ken “Puggy” Thames, age 81 of Kennard, passed away Friday, April 6, 2012 in the Lufkin Memorial Hospital. Mr. Thames was born November 8, 1930 in Houston and had lived in Kennard for the past 35 years. He was an office executive for Crutcher Resources. Mr. Thames was a member of the Kennard First Baptist Church and was a member of the Gideon Club. LOMA MAYS
Mrs. Loma Mays, age 99, passed away Friday, April 6, 2012. Mrs. Mays was born February 21, 1913 to W. H. (Harris) and Effie Hairston LaRue in Lovelady, Texas. Mrs. Mays married Aubra Mays in Lake Charles, Louisiana on Thanksgiving Day November 29, 1934. To this couple was born one son Larry Lee Mays of Crockett. Mrs. Mays received her Bachelor of Science Degree in 1935 from the then Sam Houston State Teachers College in Huntsville, Tx., and her Masters of Science Degree from Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches. She taught school for fifty years. Forty-one of those years were in the Slocum School District and the other nine were in Liberty Hill and Glover Schools in Houston County. In addition to teaching public school, she also taught Sunday School in the Methodist Church where she also served as a treasurer of the Methodist Church, which is a part of the Slocum Union Church of Slocum. Mrs. Mays also served many years as secretary treasurer of the Perpetual Care Fund of the Crawford Cemetery Association of Slocum. She belonged to the State Teachers Association and the Retired Teachers Association since 1984. Survivors include her son Larry Lee Mays and wife Marilyn, of Crockett; grandchildren Larry Todd Mays and wife Jessica, of Lufkin, Bryan Lee Mays and wife Shontel, of Round Rock and Lorrie Joyann Mays Moreno and husband Raymond, of Pearland; great-grandchildren Hayden, Landrie, Aubrey and Ragan; brothers Gordon LaRue, of Houston, Odie LaRue, of Crockett, John H. Mr. Paul Thurman Johnson, age 80, passed away March 23, 2012 at Ennis Care Center in Ennis, Texas. Mr. Johnson was born in Lovelady, (actual birth in Pearson Chapel) on February 14, 1932 to Ervin Monroe Johnson and Ethel Maude Carlton Johnson. He married Billie Merle Lambright on April 30, 1960. Mr. Johnson was retired from the US Postal Service, a member of Hampton Road Baptist Church and a veteran of the US Air Force. Mr. Jim Bob Kendrick, age 79 of Crockett, passed away Saturday, March 24, 2012 in the East Texas Medical Center-Tyler. Mr. Kendrick was born June 8, 1932 in Crockett and was a resident of Crockett for the past 25 years. Mr. Kendrick was a veteran of the United States Army having served as a Master Mechanic. He had worked as a 50 year certified mechanic of which 36 years were with Sullivan Motor Company in Crockett. Survivors include his son James “Scooter” Kendrick and wife Kay, of Crockett; daughter Tammy Millican and husband Calvin, of Centerville; grandchildren Jamie Kendrick and wife Laura, of Nederland, B’Jay Kendrick, of Dallas, Amy Flores and husband David, of Port Neches, C. Mr. Alton Nealy age 76 of Grapeland, passed away Friday, March 23, 2012 at ETMC/Crockett. Mr. Nealy was born August 16, 1935 in Grapeland to John and Martha Lewis Nealy. He was a diesel mechanic for Bartee Construction. Survivors include his wife Jo Ann Richards Nealy, of Grapeland; daughters Ann Price, of Lovelady, Deborah Allen, of Ft Polk, Sherry Lively, of Grapeland and Susan Mathews; sons Robert Nealy, of Grapeland, James Nealy, of Houston, Gary Clark, of Bryan, Charles Clark, of Elkhart, Randy Clark, of Palestine and John David Clark, of Bryan; sister Dorothy McQueen, of Latexo; brother Omer Lee Nealy, of Latexo; numerous grandchildren; and great grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents John and Martha Lewis Nealy; sons John Nealy and James Clark. Funeral Services for Mr. Alton Nealy will be held Monday, March 26, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Bailey & Foster Chapel in Grapeland with the Rev. Steve Meadows officiating. Mrs. Carolyn Smith Waller, age 66 of Latexo, passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2012 in the Whitehall Nursing Center. Mrs. Waller was born July 2, 1945 in the Creek Community and had lived in Houston County all of her lifetime. Mrs. Waller was a homemaker and a member of the San Pedro Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband Ronny F. Waller, of Latexo; sons Ronny C. Waller and wife Shelly and Darrell “Bubba” Nealy and wife Janna, all of Latexo; grandchildren Holly Waller and fiancé Jerry Torres, Jacob Waller and Lane Nealy, all of Latexo; great-grandchildren Christian Ackley and Deven Lott, both of Latexo; brother Grady Smith and wife Carolyn, of Crockett; brothers-in-law Jimmy Hutto, of Fort Worth, Jack Waller, of Crockett and A. W. Waller, of Latexo; sister-in-law Lela Henley, of Crockett; very special niece and nurse Pam Bond, of Crockett; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; very special dog, Beaudiddly. PETER SMITH
Mr. Peter Smith, age 72 of Crockett, passed away, Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at his residence. Mr. Smith was born January 31, 1940 in Rochester, New York and had been living in Crockett. Mr. Smith was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was retired having worked as a customs inspector for 23 years and was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Crockett. Survivors include his wife Heidemarie P. Smith, of Crockett; sons Bryce Smith, of Atlanta, Georgia and Andrew Smith, of Austin; step-daughters Renee’ Fairman and husband Brad, of Weatherford, Michelle McKenzie, of Wills Point, Christine Harrison, of Mansfield; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Tom Atkins, of San Antonio; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and Family at Bethel Baptist Church; special family Annie and John Jones of Crockett. Preceded in death by his parents Seward and Helen Smith; and twin sister Ann Atkins. BERTIE LEE ARNOLD
Mrs. Bertie Lee Arnold McLean, age 95 of Crockett passed away Thursday, March 22, 2012 in the Houston County Nursing Home. Mrs. Arnold was born August 22, 1916 in Pennington to E. B. and Ollie Smith Arnold. The Arnolds moved to Crockett where she grew up. She married Harry McLean on March 23, 1940. She worked for the ASC office for many years where she retired. Mrs. McLean was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church since 1949 serving on several committees. She enjoyed traveling abroad and geneology was one of her favorite interest. She was a member of the Major Jarrel Beasley Chapter DAR, David Crockett Chapter DRT, Huguenot Society of the Founders of Manakin in the Colony of Virginia: Colonel James XVII Century. She loved her friends, playing bridge and painting with watercolors. Survivors include her son James E. McLean and wife Sheila; step-grandchildren Jeff Bobbitt and wife Talitha, of Palestine, Sissy Lively and husband Randy, of Crockett, Jeremy Bobbitt and wife Dylis, of Weches and Ryan Bobbitt, of Grapeland; step-great-grandchildren Haylei and Colton Lively, Jordan, Jason, Justin and Jax Bobbitt; nephew Jared (Jerry) Arnold Anderson; great-nephew Jared Anderson. Preceded in death by her husband Harry McLean in 1990; sisters Myrtle Arnold Blankenship and Wilma Arnold Anderson Hurst. Memorial Services for Mrs. Bertie Lee Arnold McLean were held Saturday, April 7, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Tomas Spath officiating.
