Mr. Nick Lumbreraz, age 94 of Grapeland, passed away June 18, 2007 in the East Texas Medical Center-Crockett. Mr. Lumbreraz was born February 2, 1913 in LaSalle County, Texas and was a resident of Grapeland. Mr. Lumbreraz was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served as a Staff Sergeant participating in 5 campaigns in the European Theater of Operations and was awarded the Purple Heart. Mr. Lumbreraz was retired and had worked in the road construction business.
Survivors include his children Mary Squyres and husband Lonnie, of Houston County Lake, Raul Lumbreraz and wife Joy, of Houston, Daniel Lumbreraz and wife Kathy, of Grapeland, Teresa Moyer and husband Billy, of Slocum, Nick Lumbreraz and wife Mary Kay, of Cheyenne, Wyo., Christine DePoyster and husband, Joe, of Fredericksburg, Va.; sister Irene Lumbreraz, of Cotulla; grandchildren Phillip Squyres, David Squyres, Melissa Latta, Aaron Hollis, Darrell Hollis, Nicolas Lumbreraz, Justin Lumbreraz, Joey DePoyster, Kirk DePoyster; great-grandchildren Charity and Austin, Christopher and Paige, Robin, Connor, Christian and Kaden, Tyler, Keyton and Karissa, Baylee and Tyler, Nolan.
Preceded in death by his wife Margarita in 1995; grandson Casey Lumbreraz in 2002; three sisters and two brothers.
Funeral Services for Mr. Nick Lumbreraz were held Wednesday, June 20, at 2:00 p.m. in the Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Steve Meadows officiating. Interment followed in the Grapeland City Cemetery.

Ms. Melba Downs Beck, age 56 of Gause formerly of Crockett, passed away Wednesday, June 27, 2007 at her home. Ms. Beck was born January 4, 1951 in Houston County to Terrell David and Gertrude (Willis) Downs. Ms. Beck who for years selflessly provided home healthcare for the sick and elderly free of charge.
Survivors Include her daughter Carla Michells, of Nacogdoches, Carrie Denice, of Rockdale, Rebecca Ann, of Nacogdoches; brothers Beauford Downs, of Nacogdoches and Leon D. Downs, of Porter; sisters Loretta Wall, of Gause and Georgia Johnson, of Crockett; and three grandchildren
Preceded in death by her son Billy Leon Moore; brother Jimmy Downs; and sister Vinita Downs.

Ms. Martha Preston, age 66 of Vidor, passed away Saturday, June 30, 2007 at Village Creek Nursing Home in Lumberton. A native of Austonio and was a longtime resident of Vidor.
Survivors Include her sons Billy Parker, of Lumberton, Craig Parker, of Vidor; daughter Susan Fruge, of Lake Charles, La.; brother William McDonald, of Groveton; sisters Freddie LaRue and Levine Cook, both of Houston County; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial Services for Ms. Martha Preston were held Wednesday, July 4, at 5:00 p.m. at Georgia Camp Baptist Church in Creek.

Mrs. Lena Bennett Smith, age 101 of Crockett, passed away Monday, June 18, 2007 in the Houston County Nursing Home. Mrs. Lena was born March 26, 1906 in Ratcliff. Mrs. Smith was the daughter of Frank and Sallie Bennett. Mrs. Lena and husband, Arthur Smith made their home in Arbor, Texas, where they raised four daughters. Mrs. Smith was a devoted wife and loving mother and a friend to all.
Survivors include her daughters Dorothy and husband Frank, of Houston, Creola and husband Jimmie, of Crockett; son-in-law Wendell Luce, of Lufkin; eight grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by her husband Arthur Smith; daughters Marjorie Wills and Verna Luce; grandson James D. Odom; and son-in-law James Wilcox.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Lena Bennett Smith were held Tuesday, June 19, at 2:00 p.m. in the Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Terry Gibson officiating. Interment followed in the Shady Grove Cemetery.

Mr. Joseph Melton Long, Jr., age 87 of Houston, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2007 in Crockett. Mr. Long was born October 2, 1919 in Galveston. Mr. Long was a longtime resident of Houston and retired from the Southern Pacific Railroad after 41 years as an Engineer. Then, he and his wife, Bernadean, moved to Centerville to fulfill his dream of a "slow paced, peaceful country life." Mr. Long's joys were his family, tending his garden, riding his tractor and drinking coffee at Hopewell Store and let us not forget, "shopping," reading of the daily newspaper in his recliner (and saving everyone of them) and shelling pecans (which was almost passion for him).
Survivors include his sons David Michael Long, of Atlanta, GA and Joseph M. Long III and wife Margaret, of Centerville; daughter Vella Jean Malek, of Alvin; son-in-law, Art Oswald Jr., of Houston; 11 grandchildren Denise Hyland, Robin Johnson, Arthur Oswald III, Stewart Oswald II, Carmen Long, Jamie Long, Jessie Long, Joseph M Long IV, Justus Long, Shelly Studebaker and Holly Higgins; 12 great-grandchildren ˆ Tanya Hyland, Shawn Hyland, Jennifer Hollis, Kendall Hollis, Geoffrey Hollis, Amanda Oswald, Collin Oswald, Stewart "Triple" Oswald III, Austin Oswald, Jackson Ramos, Brittany Pack and Griffin Studebaker.
Preceded in death by his parents Joseph Melton Long, Sr. and Mittie (Lindsay) Long; first wife Geraldine (Walkner) Long; his loving wife of 40 yrs, Bernadean (Stuart) Long; daughter Jodine (Long) Oswald; and a brother, J.L. Long.
Funeral Services for Mr. Joseph Melton Long, Jr. were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 18, with graveside services at Parker Cemetery in Houston County held at 2:00 p.m.
Pallbearers were Shawn Hyland, Mark Hyland, Arthur Oswald III, Joseph Melton Long IV, Danny Kemper, Jim Green and Robert Ames.

Mr. John Delbert Abernathy, age 34 of Willis, passed away Friday, June 8, 2007 at his residence. Mr. Abernathy was born March 1, 1973 in Channelview and had resided in Willis since 1982. Mr. Abernathy was a truck driver and a member of the Baptist Church.
