LIVINGSTON — Funeral services for Velma O. Placker, 93, were held Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008, in the Pace Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Frank Hood officiating. Burial followed in Camp Ruby Cemetery. Mrs. Placker died on Sept. 18, 2008 in The Bradford nursing home in Livingston. She was born Dec. 24, 1914 in Polk County to Dan and Emma Pittman Overstreet. They precede her in death. Mrs. Placker was known as a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She spent most of her time quilting, knitting, doing crafts and ceramics and was a very good seamstress. She was a devoted member of Soda Baptist Church for many years. Survivors include her son, Bobby Placker and wife Wilma of Austin; two stepchildren, Jacque Jackson and Melanie Broward; two grandchildren, Steve Placker and Kelly Smith; nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. Grace Helen Brooks
TEMPLE — Grace Helen (Baker) Brooks died on Sept. 9, 2008. Private services were held through Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple. Mrs. Brooks was born on Jan. 11, 1917 to John T. and Ruby (Watson) Baker in Dayton, and was reared in Livingston. She was the youngest of three sisters: Eunice (Baker) Marsh, and Juanita (Baker) Jones. Mrs. Brooks graduated from Southwest Texas University in San Marcos and was voted one of the six top beauties of her senior class. She taught school in Livingston and Waco. She most recently resided near her daughter in Kerrville. Grace Helen Brooks was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Temple. She is preceded in death by her husbands, Edwin Taylor, M.C. (Gib) Gibler, and John Brooks. Survivors include her two children, Gayla (Gibler) Foust and husband Bruce and Sheridan Gibler and wife Karen; three grandchildren, Catherine (Gibler) Bailey, Taylor Gibler and John Gibler; granddaughter, Taylor-Marie Bailey and beloved nephew Jerry Marsh and wife Mona.
Eddie Elizabeth Worthen
LIVINGSTON — Eddie Elizabeth Worthen, 73, of Livingston died on Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008, in Corrigan. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, in the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel, with Bro. Fred Alford officiating. Burial will follow in Magnolia Cemetery in Onalaska. She was born Aug. 5, 1935 in Rising Star to parents Odis Mitchell and Hattie Mae Foley Mitchell. She married Hugh Worthen on Oct. 16, 1992 in Onalaska. She loved to fish and go to garage sales. She is preceded in death by her parents and one daughter, Eddie Janiece Savage. She is survived by her husband of 18 years, Hugh A. Worthen Sr. of Livingston; sons, Odis Arthur Smith of Eastland and Timothy Smith of Weatherford; daughter, Sherrie Elsik of Hubbard; stepsons, Hugh Anderson Worthen Jr. of Galveston and Richard Wayne Worthen of Galveston; brother, Cloyce B. Barbara Williams Buchanan
LIVINGSTON — Barbara Allen N. Williams Buchanan, 95, of Leggett died on Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008, in Memorial Medical Center in Livingston from heart complications. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, at Oak Groves Cemetery in Nacogdoches, with Michael Willette officiating. Mrs. Buchanan was a school teacher in the Texas school system for 43 years. The first 20 were in surrounding areas, with the last 23 in Livingston. She was a member of Jones Prairie Baptist Church and taught Vacation Bible School. She was known as a beloved aunt to all who knew her. She was born March 3, 1913 to Charles and Vashai Williams. Also preceding her in death were her husband, Lucian Buchanan; brother, Willeraby Williams; sister, Marie Stinson; brother-in-law, Lou Lee McCoy and nephews, Ross O’Niel and Foster Albert Wetzel Jr. She is survived by her niecein- law, Cheryl Wetzel and husband Philip Lurich; great-niece, Anna and husband Robert Nichols; great-nephew, Foster Albert Wetzel III; great-great-nieces, Velvet and Alicia Nichols; great-greatnephew, Ryan Nichols and various other friends. Mrs. Cromer was born May 22, 1913 in Rye to parents Tom and Pearl Landers Young. ONALASKA – Vincent “Chick” Carpenter, 64, of Onalaska died on Monday, Sept. 22, 2008, in Livingston. LIVINGSTON – Kenneth E. Troyer, a 20-year resident of Livingston, died on Sept. 13, 2008 in Austin. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. He was born Feb. 22, 1948 in Norfolk, Va., the son of Samuel Troyer and Eva Hammack. He was preceded in death by his father. ONALASKA – A memorial service for William Robert Taylor Sr. of Onalaska, who died on Sept. 10, 2008, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at Onalaska United Methodist Church in Onalaska, with the Rev.
