Groveton News - December 21, 2008 - January 11, 2009

     Funeral services for James A. Morris, 87, Sr. was held Saturday, December 20, 2008 at 11:00am at North Orange Baptist Church with Rev. Lynn Ashcraft officiating.  Interment followed in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Bridge City, Texas.
   Mr. Morris was born July 23, 1921 in Groveton, Texas and passed away Tuesday, Dec-ember 16, 2008 surrounded by his family.
   Mr. Morris was a former Orange County District Attorney, a Would War Ii Naval veteran, graduate of the University of Texas Law School, a trial lawyer since 1950, held positions in Angelina and Orange Counties before a successful career in the private practice of law with Stephenson, Thompson and Morris; Morris, Graves, Smith and Peveto; Morris and Pennington, past president of the Texas Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys and the former Chair of the Orange County Democratic Party, active in the Rotary Club of Orange, Lions Club, and on the Board of Levingston Ship-building Company, and supported numerous local charities.
   Mr. Morris never met a stranger and was ever proud of Orange, Texas. He dedicated much of his life to representing the less fortunate and always saw the glass of life half full. He enjoyed countless hours at Sunset Grove Country Club among the pine and pecan trees. His last years were spent in Austin, Texas. His zest for life, warm smile and genuine pleasure being in the company of friends and family will be sorely missed.
   Pallbearers were Mike Morrow, Eddie Kennedy, Joe Kennedy, Stanley Morris, Clifford Johnson, and James Arthur Johnson.
   Mr. Morris is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Alice Morris; his second wife Myra Morris; his brother in law Buford Kennedy.
   Survivors include his sister Christine Kennedy; daughter Lurline Morrow and husband Michael Morrow; son James A. Morris, Jr. and wife Kam Morris; his grandchildren Macelyn Morris, James A. Morris, III (Trip), Kylee Linney and Kylan Linney and wife Courtney; step children Autumn Clooney, Shawn, and Brett; and numerous nephews, nieces, and friends.

   Funeral services for Joyce Laverne Jennings, 68, of Groveton, Texas were held Tuesday January 6, 2009 at 10:00am at Groveton Funeral Home with Bro. Lester McAdams officiating.  Inter-ment followed in the San Jacinto Memorial Park, Houston, Texas.
  Mrs. Jennings was born July 14, 1940 in Lindale, Texas and passed away Saturday January 3, 2009 in Groveton.  She was affiliated with Oaklawn Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
     She is preceded in death by her parents J. P. Smith, Leola Foster Person; and son Robert Karl Wooten.
   Survivors include her husband Roy Len Jennings; daughter Susie Stafford of Villa Rica, Georgia; daughter in law Thersha Wooten of Kennefik, Texas; step daughters Nancy Ridge of Clearwater, Florida and Rhonda Grimes of Pearland, Texas; brother Johnny Smith; step sister Sharon Evans; step brother Murry Person, Jr.; grandchildren Richard Karl Wooten, Robert, Lindsey and Conrad Moers, and Taylor and Kailey Grimes.
    Memorials may be made to Oaklawn Baptist Church.
