Stilwell, a photographer who owned Victorian Rose in uptown Shelby for more than 20 years, was critically injured in a fall Tuesday night. He died Wednesday morning, said Pastor Timothy Sims, of Bethel Baptist Church, where Stilwell attended. “He was a peacemaker, giving, helpful, and loving person,” Sims said. “He has many attributes that Jesus mentioned in His Sermon on the Mount.” Philbeck, an artist whose work is displayed in Stilwell’s gallery and photography studio, said Stilwell always treated his customers well and had excellent taste in framing. “You want a guy like Elwin to represent your work in the area,” he said. “He had an individual like for each print.” Others in the community remember Stilwell as a gentle soul who loved to help many organizations. “He came and took photos of all our participants at the Life Enrichment Center Adult Day Care program,” said Linda Cabiness, community outreach coordinator for the center. Cabiness said she would never forget the time Stilwell gave each participant a professional photo of themselves to give to their families. “He gave them a great gift of a professional photo,” she said. “He was gentle with them and treated them with dignity.” Area residents talked about how much they would miss such a wonderful person who had been a part of the community for years. Paul Huggins, owner of Shelby Camera, Video, and Photo-graphy, said Stilwell had always helped him in every way he could when he opened his business more than five years ago. “If I had a question, he was there to help me,” Huggins said. “We worked together as partners, not as rivals.” Huggins said Stilwell was a kind person who never had a bad thing to say about anyone. “He was always friendly,” he said. “He wanted me to succeed as much as he had succeeded.” Mayor Ted Alexander said Stilwell always stood up for any good civic endeavor. “He was a dear Christian man,” said Alexander. “He had a genuine spirit.” Philbeck said Stilwell will be greatly missed throughout the community an this tragedy is truly as case of the “good dying young.” “His life was cut short, “ he said. “I feel like he had so much more to offer and do.
