Mattie Lee Howard, 89, of Shepherd, Texas, passed away Saturday, August 23, 2008. She was born in Bear Creek, Texas on January 24, 1919 to Daniel Smith Pate and Johnnie Lee Pate who preceded her in death along with her loving husband, J.C. Howard; and her sisters, Martha “Christine” Smith and Ruby Mae Squire. Pastor John F. Stephenson II conducted funeral services held Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at First United Methodist Church, Shepherd, Texas with interment at Magnolia Cemetery, Evergreen, Texas. Survivors include her sister-inlaw, Christene West; sister, Mildred Irene Vrana; brother, Julius D. Pate and wife, Gloria Jean and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews and a host of friends beyond measure.
Lloyd Allen Jarboe, gifted musician and retired social worker, of Coldspring, Texas, died Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at the age of 80. He was born on March 5, 1928, in Shepherd, Texas, to John Alvin Jarboe and Agnes Cronin Jarboe. After graduation from Shepherd High School in 1945, Jarboe joined the United States Navy and served in San Diego, California, and Yokosuka, Japan, until January 1, 1948. On the evening of August 28, 1948, he married Laverne Pope at the First Baptist Church in Shepherd, Texas. After 45 years of marriage, Laverne Pope Jarboe, an elementary school teacher for more than 30 years, preceded her husband in death on September 14, 1993. Jarboe studied music at East Texas Baptist College. Over a span of 63 years, he served as a minister of music and religious education at a number of Baptist churches in various cities including Hallsville, Sour Lake, Gilmer, Pasadena, Santa Paula, California, Magnolia, Goodrich, Onalaska, Cleveland, Baytown, and Dayton. In addition, Jarboe had a distinguished career as a social worker for the Texas Department of Human Resources which began on April 1, 1963. He rose through the ranks of the department, retiring in 1988 as program director of 13 counties within Houston Area Region II. On the afternoon of December 10, 1995, Jarboe married Betty Jordan Shirley, also a former social worker at the Texas Department of Human Resources, at the First Baptist Church in Coldspring, Texas. The two were married 13 years and lived in Coldspring. Jarboe is survived by his wife, Betty; daughter Jan Jarboe Russell and her husband, Dr. Lewis Russell, Jr.; son, Lloyd Allen Jarboe Jr.; and three grand-children, Maury Rabb, Tyler Rabb, and Calvin Jarboe. He is also survived by three step-daughters: Anna Gail Sewell and husband, Billy Green; Linda Ballard and husband, Richard; Jan Wahlen and husband, Kurt; one step-son, Charles Jordan and wife, Pam. He is also survived by eight step-grandchildren: Amy Sewell; Mark Sewell and wife, Holly; Shawn Ballard; Ashley and Charlie Jordan; Jesse, Hannah and Samuel Wahlen; and two stepgreat- grandchildren, Peyton Sewell and Keaton Fountain-Sewell. Other survivors include a brother, Judson Jarboe and wife, Peggy; two sisters, Elizabeth McKellar and Lucy Thomas and husband, the Rev. J.V. Thomas; a brother-in-law, Mike Pope and wife Jane; and sisters-in-law, Lanece Lomonte, Sharon Pope, and Diane Schule, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Sunday, August 24, at the First Baptist Church in Coldspring, followed by burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery, Coldspring, Texas. The family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Agnes Jarboe Memorial Scholarship Fund at the First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 817, Shepherd, Texas, or to the church of your choice.
