Proposed county tax rate same but taxes edge up
San Jacinto News- Times

COLDSPRING – San Jacinto County Commissioners’ Court is expected to discuss the county’s tax rate that will fund the county’s 2010-2011 budget that begins October 1. Commissioners are scheduled to meet Wednesday, Aug. 18, to discuss the proposed tax rate and take a record vote to place the item on the agenda of a future meeting of Sept. 14, as an action item to adopt the new proposed tax rate of $0.6264 per $100 property valuation, the same tax rate that was set to fund last year’s budget. This year’s effective tax rate would impose the same total taxes as last year if you compare properties taxed in both years. This year’s total effective tax rate is $0.6033 per $100 property valuation. If San Jacinto County adopts a 2010-2011 tax rate equal to the effective rate of $0.6033 per $100 of value, taxes would increase compared to 2009 taxes by $51.74. The county has unencumbered fund balances totaling $3 million in its general fund and $923,000 in its special road and bridge fund. The county intends to pay $429,559 in total debt service for 2010. Two public hearings are tentatively schedulled to be held on the proposed tax rate. The fi rst public hearing is scheduled on Sept. 1 and the second public hearing is tentatively scheduled Sept. 8.
