Picture ID for voters proposed
San Jacinto News- Times
COLDSPRING – Voting in San Jacinto County may become more streamlined with the approval of a $26,000 Help America Vote Act grant. According to San Jacinto County Judge Fritz Faulkner, the funds can be used for a variety of things, including equipment to enact picture identifi cation of voters. Faulkner said the grant will pay for laptops that allow the scanning of state issued picture identifi cation at each polling place. According to Faulkner, residents in the county could be able to participate in “open voting” during early voting periods as a result of the grant. Open voting means that county residents would no longer be required to vote in their designated precinct. They could instead vote in any voting box located in the county, according to San Jacinto County Elections Coordinator Sherryl Evans. Faulkner said there has never been a documented case of someone impersonating another person for the purposes of voting in San Jacinto County. He also said that he wants to make sure county residents feel their vote is secure and that the legitimacy of the voting process is in tact. The grant would also allow funding for the purchase of new voting machines and training for election workers.
