DETCOG supports technical training center

HEMPHILL – The Deep East Texas Council of Governments (DETCOG) Board passed a resolution Thursday in support of a $1.5 million U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Agency grant application for a technical training center to be established in Nacogdoches. The $3.6 million dollar facility is a joint project of Nacogdoches County and the Nacogdoches Economic Development Corporation. Upon completion, the training center would be administered by Angelina College. DETCOG Executive Director Walter Diggles reported to the board on the schedule for public hearings on the Partial Method of Distribution (MOD) for Round Two of Hurricane Ike Recovery funds. One third of the second round of recovery funds allocated to the DETCOG Region are being made available for housing and non-housing projects. The projects must deal with critical needs and primarily benefi t low to moderate income households. Those public hearings are scheduled for 10 a.m., Monday, August 23, 2010 at the Nacogdoches City Commission Meeting Room and 3 p.m., Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at the Jasper City Commission Meeting Room. Diggles also reported on a meeting with representatives of the East Texas and Ark-Tex Council of Governments concerning transportation planning. The three councils have rural planning organizations and are exploring a possible memorandum of understanding allowing them to cooperate on planning related to connecting roadways.
