SHEPHERD – Two people were killed, one transported to a Houston hospital and one walked away from a three vehicle accident at the Shepherd underpass on U.S. Hwy. 59 Saturday that tied-up travelers for more than nine hours. Dead are 58-year-old Hollis Taylor of Silsbee and Richard Hodges, 57, of Brazoria. According to Department of Public Safety (DPS) Trooper Mike Schraubs, Taylor was driving a tractor trailer with logging equipment on it that was too tall to clear the underpass. “The skidder was knocked off the trailer and hit a white Toyota Camry driven by Harry Wilkes, 68, of Brazoria, knocking the Toyota sideways where it was struck by a tanker truck driven by William Buckles Jr., 49, of Louisiana,” Schraubs said. Hodges was a passenger in Wilkes’ vehicle. Wilkes was transported to Hermann Memorial Hospital by air ambulance with injuries, Schraubs said. Buckles, who was driving the tanker truck walked away from the accident with no injuries, Schraubs said. The accident, which occurred around 11:35 a.m. kept Hwy. 59 traffi c diverted via FM 2914 until 9:30 p.m. while Cleveland Hazmat and Rescue teams cleaned up an estimated 50 barrels of crude oil that spilled into the roadway from the tanker truck that was punctured during the accident.
