COLDSPRING – Coldspring- Oakhurst Consolidated Independent School District and Shepherd Independent School District are among 298 districts in the State of Texas that received Academically Acceptable ratings recently from the Texas Education Agency (TEA). To earn an Acceptable rating means the district or school has TAKS passing rates of at least 70 percent on English language arts/reading; writing and social studies TAKS exams; at least 55 percent passing rates on mathematics TAKS and at least 50 percent on the science TAKS test. They also have completion rates of at least 75 percent and annual dropout rates of 2 percent or lower. Each school district has four schools for a total of eight schools in the county. Although Shepherd ISD was rated Acceptable, three of its schools received a higher rating of Recognized. Recognized campuses in Shepherd ISD are Shepherd High School and Shepherd Primary School which is rated with Shepherd Intermediate School. All four schools in Coldspring- Oakhurst CISD were rated Acceptable. The second highest rating of Recognized was received by 3,153 schools in Texas. More rigorous standards were implemented this year to determine the state’s Recognized rating. The new standards require 80 percent of all students and each evaluated student group to pass the TAKS, compared to 75 percent in previous years. Additionally, the school or district must achieve an 85 percent completion rate and must now have an annual seventh and eighth-grade dropout rate of 1.8 percent or below. The previous seventh and eighth-grade dropout rate requirement was 2 percent.
