Small town boys with big baseball hearts
return home as 2010 World Champions

SHEPHERD – Three local baseball players and one coach headed out to Orange Beach and Gulf Shores, Alabama July 10 for the 2010 USSSA Global Sports World Series Tournament and returned home as 2010 World Champions. The tournament was held July 15-18 beginning with pool play. Local team members playing for the Champion Wildstangs are #6 Devin Fontenot of Shepherd; #42 Lane Reeves of Shepherd; #15 Bryce Holmes of Livingston and Coach Tommy Reeves of Shepherd. The Wildstangs beat the Home Plate Lawson team of Georgia with a victory score of 2 to 1 on July 15. Following that game on July 15 the Wildstangs played LA Extreme of Louisiana, scoring a victory of 8-0. On July 16 the Wildstangs played Sandy Mountain Thunder of Alabama with a victory of 6-2. Later on July 16 the Wildstangs beat the Beast Baseball of Louisiana with a victory of 10-5. After pool play and hard work the Wildstangs went back into bracket play in the hardest bracket with 11 year-olds and under, scoring 4-0 in the Majors team. Bracket play started Saturday, July 17 with the Wildstangs facing G-Force of Alabama, coming away with a victory of 5-1. Because of their winnings the Wildstangs were able to celebrate their win and get rested and ready for Championship Bracket play. Knowing their potential to win and with high hopes of bringing the championship back to Texas, team members all arrived early with their game faces on. Finally, game one of the day started around 4:20 p.m., between the Wildstangs and DeSoto Cardinals of Mississippi. The game ended with a sweet victory of 1-0. Advancing to bracket play as number one, the Wildstangs moved into the championship games facing Louisiana Prospects. While anticipation and anxiety levels were running high with the parents, the Wildstangs, with big baseball hearts, were ready to hear “hit the fi eld and batter up.” Championship play went inning by inning. Team Extreme Wildstangs were up early 1-0. At the top of the sixth inning LA Prospects battled back to tie it up 1-1. Wildstangs, being home team, gathered in the huddle and got the game plan on. They battled hard; getting the bases loaded with only 1 out when the swing batter came out, hit a sweet shot down fi rst base line to score the winning run giving the team a 2-1 fi nal. Champions Team Extreme Wildstangs were awarded plaques and trophies reading: First place Champions of the USSSA Global Sports World Series 2010. “No words can ever express how proud we are as parents and to us this was the payoff for the miles and numerous hours on the road and dedication to our sons. We would like the people of these communities to realize we came from small towns towns but we have great abilities to go a very long way in life.
